Undead Unluck to Return With Brand-New Original Anime

As a diehard fan of the Undead Unluck anime, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and anticipation for what’s to come! After binge-watching the 24 episodes and eagerly waiting for any news about the series, I was overjoyed when the announcement dropped about a new one-hour special in 2025. The teaser alone had me on edge with its hints at the Winter Arc, but the revelation of an original story featuring a new UMA called Balance has me absolutely buzzing!

Similar to its unkillable protagonist, the animated series Undead Unluck continues to breathe life back into itself with a fresh one-hour special airing in 2025. Unlike the source material, this special will present an entirely new story that’s independent of the manga or spin-off novels. An intriguing teaser initially hinted at the potential themes of the animation. The Undead Unluck anime spanned 24 episodes, chronicling the adventures of a man who refuses to die and a young woman cursed with an unparalleled string of misfortunes. The animated series follows events slightly beyond the first six volumes of the manga, concluding at the Autumn Arc in the comics.

The preview showcases a severe snowfall, suggesting the upcoming episode will delve into the Winter storyline from the comic book. However, surprisingly, this storyline, which spanned merely three chapters in the comic, won’t be fully covered in the upcoming hour-long special. Instead, it will introduce an original tale centering around a new creature called Balance, which are the dangerous beings the main characters pursue and battle throughout the series. This unique story is the brainchild of the manga’s author, Yoshifumi Tozuka, and will primarily focus on characters Andy and Kazeko. The hour-long special is slated for release in Winter 2025, though an exact date has yet to be confirmed.

The Future of Undead Unluck

In March 23rd, 2024, the final episode of the “Undead Unluck” anime series aired. So far, only a special hour-long episode has been confirmed as a follow-up to the show, with no news about season 2 yet. Given that there are still more than 18 volumes of manga left to be adapted, fans eagerly anticipate the continuation of the anime, hoping to see popular storylines animated. The latest volume, number 23, was released in Japan on October 4th this year, and volumes 24 and 25 are set to release a month apart, starting from January and February 2025 respectively. Contrary to speculation, the manga will continue its run in 2025.

Shueisha and Jump Comics are responsible for publishing and releasing manga series in Japan, while Viz Media takes care of translating and distributing these same series in North America. The latest volume released by Viz is volume 17, with the next one set to come out in January. As for the anime adaptation of Undead Unluck, it has been exclusively streaming on Hulu in the U.S., but can be found on Disney+ everywhere else. It remains unclear if Hulu will continue to have exclusive streaming rights for any special episodes.
