Have you ever started watching a movie and felt confident about its outcome by the midpoint, as if you could take a 20-minute nap without missing any crucial details? If that’s your idea of a film, then I’m sorry to say that Sorry to Bother You, a 2018 sci-fi comedy directed and written by Boots Riley, is not for you. Despite its seemingly ordinary title, this movie is anything but ordinary. With an impressive cast including LaKeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson, Terry Crews, Danny Glover, and Steven Yeun, Sorry to Bother You is a hidden gem that is now available for streaming on Hulu. If you haven’t seen it yet, now might be the perfect time because you won’t find many films quite like it.
As a passionate cinephile, I’d like to share my thoughts on “Sorry to Bother You.” This film follows the journey of Cassius “Cash” Green (Stanfield), a young adult grappling with financial struggles who takes on a telemarketing job. However, Cash soon realizes that this line of work isn’t as straightforward as he thought. He faces challenges connecting with customers over the phone until Langston (Glover), an older colleague, advises him to use his “white voice” to make calls more effectively. This unusual piece of advice leads to a wave of success for Cash, but soon he finds himself entangled in a sinister corporate plot that’s as absurdly funny as it is hard to believe. While “Sorry to Bother You” might not leave Gen Z with chronic anxiety, it will undoubtedly make you feel a tad uneasy the next time you pick up the phone.
Is This a Bad Time to Talk?
In a 2018 interview with NPR, Riley explained the inspiration for his movie “Sorry to Bother You” and why he was the ideal storyteller for this project. When asked to describe his film, Riley referred to it as an “absurdist, dark comedy infused with magical realism and science fiction, inspired by the telemarketing world.” Having previously worked as a telemarketer himself, Riley was able to draw upon his experiences to create a fantastical story while keeping it grounded in reality. If you’ve ever received an unexpected telemarketing call when you were trying to enjoy dinner, then you know there are countless stories of frustration just waiting to be told.
In a nod from Rotten Tomatoes critics with a score of 93%, the movie “Sorry to Bother You” garnered numerous accolades for its unique and humorous narrative, along with its incisive critique of the problematic corporate culture in America. Additionally, it humorously highlighted cultural disparities within the U.S., particularly between African American and White communities. However, this groundbreaking sci-fi comedy often gets sidelined when discussing some of the finest comedies of the 21st century. Beyond delivering a profound message wrapped in laughter, “Sorry to Bother You” also catapulted Lakeith Stanfield into stardom.
Getting His Chance to Shine
Is it possible that another actor could have portrayed the character of Cash in Sorry to Bother You? Well, theoretically, yes, but Lakeith Stanfield really brings something special to his roles. It’s like he possesses an innate talent or “It,” a quality some actors spend their entire careers trying to achieve without success. With Stanfield, it seems almost effortless—he’s naturally captivating on screen and difficult to replicate.
In 2012, Donald Glover’s series Short Term 12 marked Lakeith Stanfield’s first acting credit, later turned into a full-length film in 2013. Despite subsequent appearances in films like Selma, Dope, and Straight Outta Compton, it was his role as Darius on the television series Atlanta in 2016 that truly showcased Stanfield’s acting prowess. Though Darius appears to be an odd and detached character, he possesses a captivating likeability that makes him stand out in any scene. Initially a supporting character on Atlanta, Stanfield’s talent is impossible to overlook. His leading role in Sorry to Bother You further solidified his status as an actor to watch and demonstrated his ability to carry a movie solo.
You can stream Sorry to Bother You now on Hulu.
