As a huge fan, I’m thrilled to share that the often overlooked, pulse-pounding action thriller ‘Shooter’ is finding a fresh streaming home starting from June 1st. You can catch it exclusively on Tubi!
In the film “Shooter,” Mark Wahlberg portrays Bob Lee Swagger, a former Force Recon Marine Scout Sniper, who is falsely accused of murder by a group of mercenaries working for a private military corporation. The plot unfolds as Swagger is on the run, employing his exceptional military skills to identify the true culprits and establish his innocence. Interestingly, this movie adapts the storyline from Stephen Hunter’s novel “Point of Impact” where Wahlberg’s sniper character finds himself entangled in an attempt on the President’s life, which compels him to escape and utilize his elite military knowledge to expose the real threats and exonerate himself.
The marksman, witnesses Swagger lured out of his retirement, with the hope that he would avert an impending assassination attempt, only to be later accused of it himself. After much hesitation, Swagger agrees to assist in protecting the President, but is eventually betrayed, setting the stage for the film’s high-octane action as he sets out to uncover the truth. Alongside Wahlberg, Shooter featured performances by Michael Peña, Danny Glover, Levon Helm, and Ned Beatty.
When it came out in 2007, the movie “Shooter” got mixed opinions from critics who felt the story was unrealistic and filled with inconsistencies, making it too much like other action/thriller films. Despite this, the film has a 47% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. However, its true value is shown by its audience score, which indicates that “Shooter” might be undervalued in Mark Wahlberg’s filmography. Based on over 250,000 ratings, the movie has an impressive 80% approval rating from viewers, also known as its Popcornmeter score.
Although people seemed to find Shooter entertaining, the movie didn’t make a significant impact at the box office. With an investment of $61 million, it only managed to earn $95 million globally, ranking third in its debut weekend, overshadowed by two larger productions: the animated superhero film TMNT, featuring Chris Evans and Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Zack Snyder’s epic historical war movie 300, starring.
Wahlberg Later Produced a Shooter TV Series for USA Network
Despite not being as high-profile as blockbusters like The Italian Job or Transformers, Shooter managed to gain a second life beyond movie theaters. In 2007, a TV series adapted from the Bob Lee Swagger books by Stephen Hunter was produced for USA Network, with Wahlberg serving as one of the executive producers.
The TV show “Shooter” featured Ryan Phillippe taking over the role originated by Mark Wahlberg as Swagger. Over three seasons, it aired 31 episodes between 2016 and 2018, much like its movie counterpart. Critics gave it a mixed response, labeling it a drama that was poorly developed and lacked originality. Unfortunately, the show was canceled in 2018 as viewership dropped significantly compared to earlier seasons due to decreasing interest.
Mark Wahlberg’s Shooter arrives on Tubi starting June 1.
