A man ventures into a bar, intends to buy a half-bottle of his preferred wine, but the establishment doesn’t offer such sizes. With no further dialogue required, his unsolicited loneliness becomes conspicuously apparent.
Luckily, since he’s off duty, a TV detective is what he is, so a call about newly found bones in a marsh on his phone will likely rescue him from this pressing predicament.
Sanjeev Bhaskar’s character, Detective Inspector Sunil ‘Sunny’ Khan, nearly jumps up from his seat in eagerness to witness this grim event. Simultaneously, DCI Jess James (played by Sinéad Keenan) also requires assistance, as she ponders the mystery behind her husband preparing a surprise seabass dinner for her. Could the apparent female hair found on his coat lapel be connected to this? Before she could find out if the seabass would be served or not, her phone rang and she too became stuck in the bog.
In the resurgence of the series Unforgotten, we find two police officers grappling with complex personal issues. Contrasting this, the task of unraveling cold cases involving deceased bodies seems simpler compared to navigating the daily struggles they face in their lives.
After only their second season as a duo, Sunny and Jess have developed a comfortable rapport akin to well-worn slippers, an unexpected turn of events considering the fan distress over the sudden, sorrowful exit of Sunny’s previous supervisor Cassie (Nicola Walker).
To put it simply, these two characters were so intertwined, there was a risk they’d end up repeating the pattern of the TV show “Moonlighting.” It’s fascinating to consider how writer Chris Lang managed to seamlessly blend their interactions together.
One short season later, it’s as though Jess was always there. We viewers are a fickle bunch.
One more series demonstrating that a well-known star’s absence doesn’t necessarily lead to a show’s downfall is “Unforgotten.” This genre, especially crime dramas, has proven resilient and capable of maintaining its appeal without relying heavily on big names.
Douglas Henshall was the primary attraction on the show Shetland, but after his departure, Ashley Jensen stepped in and the series continued smoothly. Additionally, the storyline delved into the unease of the locals towards the newcomer DI Ruth Calder until she gained their acceptance, symbolized by her earning the right to wear tartan.
Moreover, having Alison O’Donnell play Tosh, the series has added a new layer of depth, with these two characters providing mutual support as they navigate their complicated personal lives, often sharing their stories over large glasses of wine. This dynamic has been likened to a Scottish version of Cagney and Lacey.
In 2014, when the initial detective on Death in Paradise, Richard Poole, unexpectedly left, his followers on Saint Marie expressed heartfelt reactions. However, this series has delved into the realm of Doctor Who with its continuous changes in leadership, and after 14 seasons and five different detectives, the cast no longer attempt to hide their lack of surprise.
In the long-running series Midsomer Murders, Neil Dudgeon has taken on the role of DCI Barnaby, a position he’s held for as many years as his predecessor, John Nettles. Taggart, another well-known show, is a great example of enduring quality in both tone and setting; despite changing the name on its packaging, it continued to stand strong.
In my last piece, I discussed how comedy spin-offs rely on a compelling lead character to keep us engaged, whereas in crime dramas, if the foundation is solid, it not only survives but thrives even amidst cast changes.
In every captivating season of Unforgotten, I find myself immersed in the intricate tapestry of diverse contemporary lives that somehow intertwine with a past marked by both deep affection and heartrending loss. Sunny’s transition from Cassie to Jess feels organic, a poignant reflection of how time subtly alters our paths, mirroring the ebb and flow of life in each one of us.
