As I delve deeper into this tragic tale, my heart is heavy with sorrow and disbelief. The life of Brian Thompson, a man who touched so many lives, was abruptly cut short by an act of senseless violence.
The leader of UnitedHealth Group, the company that owns UnitedHealthcare, is standing up for their employees after the detention of Luigi Mangione.
Following my younger counterpart’s arrest for the homicide of UnitedHealthcare CEO, Brian Thompson, I, as the CEO of UnitedHealth Group, would like to share my perspectives on the public’s reaction.
In a recent opinion piece for The New York Times, Witty expressed heartfelt gratitude for the massive show of support for Brian, who managed UnitedHealthcare, our health insurance business, as well as for our entire company, which I oversee. However, we are finding it difficult to comprehend this heinous act and the hostility that has been targeted at our team members who have been under attack with threats.
Moreover, although Witty acknowledged the widespread “dissatisfactions” with how efficiently the U.S. healthcare system functions, he remained steadfast in his support for the work carried out by his company and the valuable services they offer.
He went on to say, “The system we’re dealing with isn’t something that was intentionally designed; instead, it’s been pieced together gradually over time. Our goal is to improve its functionality.
He added, “Every corner of it is filled with people who try to do their best for those they serve.”
As a devoted follower, I’d like to underscore that the late Thompson, tragically taken from us on December 4 in New York en route to a conference, was one of those extraordinary individuals. He inspired us to establish specialized teams to assist the most vulnerable among us in navigating our healthcare system.
Yesterday, statements from Witty emerged, following the arrest of Briana Boston in Florida, who is accused of threatening BlueCross BlueShield insurance company. This threat was made by using phrases similar to those found on the spent cartridge cases of the bullets that took the life of Thompson.
In a conversation on record with the insurance company, as stated in the affidavit NBC News acquired, she was heard saying, “Postpone, reject, dismiss.” She then added, “It’s your turn next.
Following her apprehension, the 42-year-old mother of three expressed remorse towards the authorities by stating that she posed no threat to anyone.
Nevertheless, she asserted, “Healthcare corporations manipulated situations and seemingly invited retribution due to their unscrupulous nature.
Regarding Mangione, he continues to be detained following his arrest and charging on December 9 at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Alongside the murder charge he has in New York, he is also dealing with three charges in Pennsylvania related to illegal gun possession and forged documents.
Thomas Dickey, his attorney, informed CNN on December 10th that Mangione intends to plead innocent in the case. He is also still receiving monetary aid from the public to help fund his legal proceedings.
Additionally, Dickey communicated that he won’t be accepting those donations, amounting to $34,000 on a single fundraising platform. However, his client is grateful for the expressed support.
When questioned about his belief that the public is contributing funds for Mangione’s defense, Dickey offered an explanation.
In simpler terms, he argued on CNN that since the Supreme Court allows extremely wealthy individuals to donate funds in any manner to candidates, it is considered as an exercise of their freedom of speech. Therefore, these donations could be seen as a form of support for his client.

Brian Thompson was the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. He first joined the company in 2004 and held several positions before taking on the role of CEO in 2021.
Prior to working at UnitedHealthcare, Thompson was employed at PwC, according to his LinkedIn profile. He also graduated with honors from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor’s degree in business administration as an accounting major in May 1997, the school’s public relations manager Steve Schmadeke told NBC News.
Thompson, who lived in Minnesota, was married to Paulette Thompson—though according to public records viewed by TopMob News, they had been living in separate homes—and was the father of two sons.
He was shot and killed in New York on Dec. 4, 2024. Thompson was 50 years old.
At 6:46 a.m. on December 4, 2024, patrol officers from the Midtown North Precinct of the New York City Police Department responded to a shooting incident outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny confirmed this during a press briefing later in the day.
Based on Kenny’s account, the gunman made his way on foot to the New York Hilton Midtown, arriving there five minutes before Thompson did. In a video, it was observed that Thompson left another hotel alone at 6:44 a.m., presumably for a UnitedHealth Group investors conference scheduled for 8 a.m. that day. The shooter, disregarding other pedestrians, approached Thompson from behind, fired shots, and continued walking towards him.
During a press briefing held on December 6th, Kenny shared that investigators possess footage of the shooter reaching Port Authority in New York City on November 24th. He further stated that this bus is believed to have originated in Atlanta and had multiple stops en route. However, they’re unsure where exactly the shooter boarded the bus.
At a press briefing on December 4, Kenny described the suspect as a man with lighter skin who was wearing a jacket of a light brown or beige color, a black face mask, sneakers that were black and white, and a distinctively gray backpack.
In the following days, the NYPD released several photos of the person they were seeking, many of which had the individual’s face obscured due to the use of a mask.
A senior law enforcement official informed NBC News on December 5 that the unmasked photos came from surveillance video taken at an Upper West Side hostel, and two separate sources noted to the outlet that investigators were attempting to ascertain whether the individual had used a fake ID and cash for a room at the hostel.
It was also reported that the suspect lowered his mask during an interaction while checking in, making casual conversation with the clerk, and smiled at her.
Additionally, Kenny mentioned that a cellphone was discovered in the alley where the shooter escaped before reaching the ebike, but it remains undetermined if the phone belonged to the gunman. Two law enforcement sources told NBC News that a backpack was also found in Central Park.
Kenny added that investigators are examining all potential leads—such as Thompson’s social media and interviews with colleagues and family members—to aid their investigation, and they are collaborating with law enforcement agencies in Minnesota and Atlanta.
On December 9th, the Altoona Police Department in Pennsylvania apprehended Luigi Mangione on gun-related accusations. As reported by NBC News, the charges against him include two felonies – one for forgery and another for unlicensed firearm possession – as well as three misdemeanors: altering records or identification, possessing tools used in a crime, and providing false information to law enforcement.
Beyond acting suspiciously, Tisch mentioned, Mangione was found with several fake IDs, including a U.S. passport. Furthermore, during the investigation, officers discovered a firearm on him, consistent with the weapon used in the murder. A suppressor was also found. Additionally, they recovered clothing items, such as a mask that resembles those worn by our suspect.
On December 9th, I learned that Manhattan prosecutors have accused my idol, Mangione, of murder, as reported by NBC News from court documents they’ve obtained. Incredibly, he’s also been hit with three weapon-related charges: two counts for illegally carrying loaded firearms (second-degree), and one for possessing a silencer (third degree). To top it off, there’s a charge of possessing a forged instrument.
According to NBC News, based on NYPD reports, Mangione was found with a three-page document containing approximately 300 words when he was arrested. This document reportedly contained phrases such as “Frankly these parasites had it coming,” indicating anger towards certain entities.
On December 10, Mangione appeared at a hearing held at the Blair County Courthouse in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. Upon his arrival, NBC News stated that he expressed to families present, “This is completely detached from reality and an affront to the intelligence of the American public.
Luigi Mangione, a former Ivy League graduate with engineering degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, is currently under suspicion for the murder of Brian Thompson and is facing multiple charges in both Pennsylvania and New York, including forgery and unlawful weapon possession.
Following the news of his tragic death due to gun violence, Brian Thompson’s family expressed their heartache in these words: “We are devastated by the senseless loss of our cherished Brian,” a statement released on Dec. 5 revealed to NBC affiliate KARE in Minneapolis. “Brian was an exceptionally kind, giving, and gifted individual who lived every moment with passion and left an indelible impact on countless lives. Above all, he was a loving father to our two sons, and his absence will be deeply felt. We ask for your sympathy during this challenging period, and we kindly request privacy as we navigate through our grief.
UnitedHealth Group, the umbrella organization behind UnitedHealthcare, expressed profound sorrow and disbelief at the demise of their cherished associate, Thompson. In response, flags were lowered to half-mast at their corporate headquarters in Minnesota.
