As a seasoned observer of human events, I find myself deeply saddened and shocked by the senseless taking of Brian Thompson’s life. From the accounts shared, it is clear that he was a man who lived his life to the fullest, touching many lives in the process. His family’s grief is palpable, and my heart goes out to them during this difficult time.
The case of who killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has yet to be solved.
On December 4, 2024, the executive was tragically killed in New York. Notably, New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch indicated that the incident seems to be a bold, planned assault rather than a spontaneous act of violence.
At a press conference on December 4th, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny disclosed that Thompson was spotted walking independently towards the New York Hilton Midtown at around 6:44 AM. It appears he was likely heading there for a UnitedHealth Group investors meeting scheduled for 8 AM on that same day.
Approaching the Hilton roughly five minutes ahead of the CEO’s arrival, I found myself in an observant state as various individuals strolled past me, according to the investigators’ findings. Subsequently, I discharged my weapon towards the 50-year-old individual who happened to be the CEO.
While the victim was making their way towards the conference hotel, the perpetrator moved up from behind and discharged multiple shots. The victim was hit at least twice – once in the back and once in the right leg – as per Tisch’s statement. It seems that various individuals walked past the suspect, but he appeared to bide his time, waiting for his target to arrive.
Kenny said the NYPD’s Midtown North Precinct responded to a call about the shooting at 6:46 a.m. and two minutes later arrived at the scene, where they found Thompson with gunshot wounds. The shooter had already fled. According to Kenny, emergency medical services transported Thompson to nearby Mount Sinai West, where he was pronounced dead at 7:12 a.m.
The gunman has yet to be named or arrested—though the NYPD has released pictures of a person of interest—and the investigation remains ongoing as officials search for answers.
“The motive for this murder currently is unknown,” Kenny added, “but based on the evidence we have so far it does appear the victim was specifically targeted. But at this point, we do not know why.”
Paulette Thompson’s statements reveal that her late husband, Brian Thompson, had faced some threats in the past. During a conversation with NBC News on December 5th, she mentioned that there were individuals who posed a threat to him, but she didn’t have specific details about these threats. As investigators search for the perpetrator, UnitedHealthcare has expressed their deep sorrow over Brian Thompson’s death, and his family has publicly shared their mourning. In a statement obtained by NBC affiliate KARE on December 5th, they said, “We are devastated to learn about the senseless murder of our cherished Brian. He was an exceptionally kind, generous, talented man who lived life to the fullest and made a profound impact on many lives. Above all, he was a loving father to our two sons and will be deeply missed. We welcome your sympathies and ask for privacy as we navigate through this challenging period.

As an ardent admirer, I’ve always been captivated by the journey of Brian Thompson. From 2004 onwards, he graced UnitedHealthcare with his presence, holding various roles before ascending to the esteemed position of CEO in 2021.
He was shot and killed in New York on Dec. 4, 2024. Thompson was 50 years old.
On December 4, 2024, at approximately 6:46 a.m., NYPD officers from the Midtown North Precinct were dispatched to a shooting incident outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel, as stated by NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny during a press conference later that morning.
As reported by Kenny, the unidentified shooter who remains at large is said to have made his way on foot to the New York Hilton Midtown, arriving there five minutes before Thompson did. In a video recording, Thompson was observed walking alone towards the hotel at 6:44 a.m., having just exited another nearby accommodation for a UnitedHealth Group investors conference scheduled to commence at 8 a.m. that day.
During a press conference on December 4th, Kenny stated that the suspect in question seemed to be a male with lighter skin, dressed in a light-brown or cream-colored jacket, a black mask, black and white sneakers, and an easily recognizable gray backpack.
Upon hearing the news of his tragic death due to gunfire, Brian’s family expressed deep sorrow for their loss. A statement obtained by NBC affiliate KARE in Minneapolis on Dec. 5 stated: “We are heartbroken over the senseless demise of our cherished Brian. Brian was a remarkable individual, full of love, generosity, and talent, who lived life vibrantly and positively impacted countless lives. Above all, he was an amazing father to our two sons and will be profoundly missed. We welcome your sympathies and kindly ask for privacy as we navigate through this challenging period.
Apart from that, Paulette Thompson mentioned to NBC News on December 5th that her husband had been receiving threats. Essentially, she didn’t have specifics, but it seemed like he felt there was insufficient coverage or attention, which may have led to these threats against him.
As a dedicated follower, I echo the sentiments expressed by UnitedHealth Group upon the passing of our esteemed colleague and friend, Thompson. In a heartfelt statement, the organization conveyed its deep sorrow and shock, lowering flags at half-mast in their corporate headquarters in Minnesota.
