Brian Thompson was the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. He first joined the company in 2004 and held several positions before taking on the role of CEO in 2021.
Prior to working at UnitedHealthcare, Thompson was employed at PwC, according to his LinkedIn profile. He also graduated with honors from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor’s degree in business administration as an accounting major in May 1997, the school’s public relations manager Steve Schmadeke told NBC News.
Thompson, who lived in Minnesota, was married to Paulette Thompson—though according to public records viewed by TopMob News, they had been living in separate homes—and was the father of two sons.
He was shot and killed in New York on Dec. 4, 2024. Thompson was 50 years old.

Early in the morning, around 6:46 a.m., a distressing incident occurred where someone was shot. NYPD Chief of Detectives, Joseph Kenny, confirmed this during a press briefing later that day.

In a video, Kenny explained that Thompson was spotted walking alone towards the Hilton at 6:44 a.m., having left another nearby hotel for a UnitedHealth Group investors conference scheduled for 8 a.m. that day.
During a press conference held on December 6th, Kenny revealed that investigators possess footage of the gunman arriving at Port Authority in New York City on November 24th night. He further stated that the bus from which the shooter arrived is believed to have originated in Atlanta and had multiple stops along its route, so they’re unsure where exactly he boarded the bus.
During a press briefing on December 4, Kenny stated that the suspect seemed to be a man of lighter complexion who was wearing a jacket in a light brown or cream color, a black face mask, sneakers with a black and white pattern, and a distinct gray backpack.
On December 9, Luigi Mangione was apprehended by the Altoona Police Department on firearm-related charges. As reported by NBC News, the charges include two felonies: one for forgery and one for carrying a firearm without a license, along with three misdemeanors: tampering with records or identification, possessing tools used in criminal activities, and providing false identification to law enforcement officers.
