UnitedHealthcare CEO Murder Case: Luigi Mangione Pleads Not Guilty

Luigi Mangione’s case is moving forward.

Four months following the accusation connected to the gruesome murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on December 4th, I found myself standing in a courtroom as the defendant pleaded not guilty to federal charges on April 25th, as reported by NBC News journalists present at the scene.

Following the reading of the charges by Judge Margaret Garnett – which included two charges of stalking, one charge of murder committed with a firearm, and another charge related to the use of a silencer – Mangione responded, “I plead not guilty.

Mangione’s next hearing is set for Dec. 5, which is when a trial date will be set.

Alternatively, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, acting as the lead defense attorney, proposed that the federal case against Mangione should be tried before the concurrent state cases in New York and Pennsylvania, given that the federal case potentially holds a penalty of capital punishment.

Four months after denying guilt for murder and terrorism allegations made by the New York State prosecutors, his petition was filed. In Pennsylvania, he still hasn’t entered a plea regarding the five charges that have been brought against him.

In a potential turn of events, Mangione may spend his life in prison if found guilty in his New York trial. However, earlier this month, President Trump’s Attorney General, Pamela Bondi, declared that they intend to pursue capital punishment if Mangione is found guilty in federal court.

Luigi Mangione is accused of deliberately and ruthlessly taking the life of Brian Thompson, a blameless man and loving father of two small children. This heinous act of premeditated murder has sent shockwaves across America, as stated by Bondi on April 1st. After thorough examination, I have ordered federal prosecutors to pursue capital punishment in this case, aligning with President Trump’s efforts to combat violent crime and ensure the safety of our nation once more.

In light of recent developments, Friedman Agnifilo publicly criticized the Justice Department for vigorously defending an ailing, unethical, and lethal healthcare sector.

In her statement to NBC News, she expressed that the Justice Department’s intention to kill Luigi Mangione has shifted from being dysfunctional to being brutal. She also stated that their choice to execute Luigi is politically motivated.

She stated, “We’re ready to confront these federal accusations, originating from what appears to be a lawless Department of Justice, as well as the charges in New York and Pennsylvania. If they decide to add more, Luigi will face those too. Essentially, Luigi is stuck in a dangerous game of pull-and-hold between state and federal prosecutors, with the prize being a young man’s life.

In response, Mangione voiced his appreciation for the help he’s gotten during his stay at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.

He expressed on his site in February that he is both swamped and appreciative of those who have reached out to share their tales and show their backing. Although he can’t respond to most letters, understand that he takes the time to read each one he gets. Once again, thank you to everyone who took the effort to write. I eagerly anticipate hearing more from you in the future.

Keep reading for a breakdown of what we know about the killing of Brian Thompson.

Initially, Brian Thompson served as CEO at UnitedHealthcare, a position he assumed in 2021 after joining the company back in 2004, holding various roles prior to that. His professional journey before UnitedHealthcare included stints at PwC, as per his LinkedIn profile. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in business administration with a focus on accounting, graduating with honors from the University of Iowa in May 1997, as confirmed by Steve Schmadeke, the school’s public relations manager, to NBC News.

Thompson resided in Minnesota and was married to Paulette Thompson, though it was reported that they had been living apart according to records viewed by TopMob News. He was a father of two sons. Tragically, Thompson was gunned down in New York on December 4, 2024, at the age of 50.

6:46 a.m. on December 4, 2024, patrol officers from the Midtown North Precinct of the New York City Police Department responded to an incident involving a person who had been shot outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny confirmed this during a press briefing later that morning.

Kenny detailed that officers arrived at the scene two minutes later, and discovered gunshot wounds on the victim’s back and leg. The injured individual was taken to Mount Sinai West hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries at 7:12 a.m.

NYPD commissioner Jessica Tisch added during the briefing that the victim was in New York City for an investor conference. She suggested that the suspect had been lying in wait, and when the victim walked towards the conference hotel, the shooter emerged from behind and fired multiple shots, hitting the victim at least once in the back and once in the right calf. Several people reportedly passed the suspect without noticing him.

Tisch described the shooting as a “premeditated, pre-planned, targeted attack” rather than a random act of violence. She emphasized that the NYPD is actively investigating this case and will tirelessly work to identify and apprehend the shooter responsible for this heinous crime.

As per Kenny’s account, the gunman made his way to the New York Hilton Midtown on foot and arrived there five minutes ahead of Thompson. In a video, Kenny explained that Thompson was spotted walking alone towards the Hilton at 6:44 a.m., apparently leaving another hotel for a UnitedHealth Group investors conference scheduled for 8 a.m. that day. The chief detective further detailed that the shooter, who ignored other pedestrians, approached Thompson from behind, fired shots, walked towards him and continued shooting. After the shooting, the gunman fled on foot before hopping onto an ebike and riding into Central Park at Center Drive by 6:48 a.m. During the investigation, three live nine-millimeter rounds and three empty shell casings were recovered. On December 6th press briefing, Kenny mentioned that the words “depose,” “delay” and “deny” were written on one of the shell casings with marker. However, the motive behind this killing remains unconfirmed at this point.

During the press conference held on December 6, Kenny stated that investigators have video evidence showing the shooter arriving at Port Authority in New York City on November 24. He further explained that this bus is believed to have originated in Atlanta with multiple stops along the route, so they’re uncertain where exactly the gunman boarded the bus.

After his arrival at Port Authority, Kenny continued, the shooter hailed a taxi and went near the Hilton hotel, where he stayed for approximately half an hour before moving to an Upper West Side hostel. On the morning of the shooting incident, Kenny added, the gunman departed from the hostel at 5:30 a.m., arrived at the Hilton hotel at 5:41 a.m., and spent some time in the area around the hotel before visiting a nearby Starbucks at around 6:44 a.m., where he bought a bottled water and a snack. He then returned to the hotel, and the shooting took place at 6:44 a.m.

Immediately following the shooting, Kenny said, the shooter escaped. The video footage showed the gunman entering Central Park at 60th St. and Central Drive at 6:48 a.m., and exiting the park through W. 77th St. and Central Park West at 6:56 a.m. At 7:00 a.m., Kenny added, the gunman was seen on W. 86th St without his bike. Four minutes later, the chief detective continued, the shooter hailed a cab at 86th St. and Amsterdam Avenue. Kenny said that the gunman was spotted near the George Washington Bridge at 7:30 a.m.

Kenny told CNN on December 6 that investigators believed the shooter had left New York City after being seen at Port Authority.

During a December 4 press conference, Kenny described the suspect as a man with lighter skin who wore a light-colored jacket, possibly brown or cream, a black face mask, black and white sneakers, and a distinctive gray backpack. Over the following days, the NYPD released several photos of the suspect, many of which had the individual’s face concealed due to the mask.

On December 5, an NBC News senior law enforcement official revealed that clearer images without masks were obtained from surveillance footage at an Upper West Side hostel. The officials also mentioned that investigators are examining whether the suspect used a false ID and cash for the hostel room.

It was reported that the suspect lowered his face mask during a check-in interaction, where he had a casual conversation with a clerk and flashed a smile. However, it remains uncertain if a cellphone found in an alley belongs to the shooter or not. Additionally, a backpack was discovered in Central Park.

Kenny stated that investigators are examining everything—including Thompson’s social media, interviews with employees, and family members—that could aid the investigation. They are also collaborating with law enforcement agencies in Minnesota and Atlanta.

As an over-the-moon fanatic, I can’t contain my excitement as I share the thrilling news: Luigi Mangione, the very name that sends chills down my spine, was apprehended by the Altoona Police Department on firearm charges last Dec. 9!

According to a criminal docket obtained by NBC News, he’s facing some serious allegations. There are two felony charges: one for forgery and another for carrying a firearm without a license. Moreover, there are three misdemeanors on the list: tampering with records or identification, possessing instruments of a crime, and providing false identification to law enforcement.

A brave McDonald’s employee recognized Mangione, leading to the Altoona police being notified. When asked if he had visited New York lately, Mangione reportedly fell silent and started to tremble, as shared by NBC News.

NYPD commissioner Tisch referred to Mangione as a “person of interest” in the Thompson murder case. She expressed gratitude for the joint efforts of law enforcement partners and the public in tracking him down.

For over five days, our NYPD investigators sifted through countless hours of video, pursued hundreds of tips, and meticulously analyzed every piece of forensic evidence: DNA, fingerprints, IP addresses, and so much more. They deployed drones, canine units, and scuba divers. They leveraged technology like the domain awareness system, Argus cameras, and conducted aviation canvases. Our detectives also went door-to-door interviewing potential witnesses and employing the classic detective work that our investigators are renowned for. This blend of traditional detective work and modern technology is what ultimately led to this arrest today.

Besides acting suspiciously, Tisch mentioned, Mangione was found to possess several fake IDs along with a U.S. passport. Furthermore, during the investigation, officers discovered a firearm on him, as well as a silencer, which matched the weapon used in the murder. They also found clothing items, including a mask similar to those worn by our suspect. Tisch added that they also recovered a fraudulent New Jersey ID card, identical to the one used by the individual to check into the New York hostel prior to the shooting. Moreover, they found a hand-written note revealing his motivation and mindset.

On December 9th, Manhattan authorities accused Mangione of murder, as confirmed by court documents obtained by NBC News. The individual, aged 26, is also being charged with three weapons-related offenses: two counts of carrying a loaded firearm (at the second degree level), and one count for possession of a silencer (third degree). Additionally, he is facing charges for possessing a forged instrument. He has not yet pleaded to any of these accusations.

As per NBC News, supported by the NYPD’s account, Mangione was found with three pages of writings, totaling under 300 words when he was arrested. These writings reportedly contained the phrase, “Frankly these parasites had it coming.”

In his writings, Mangione claimed to have acted alone, although senior law enforcement officials stated they haven’t ruled out other parties at this stage.

The writings further indicated that Mangione addressed the authorities directly, expressing respect for their work but also stating he wasn’t working with anyone else. He expressed remorse for any distress caused but felt it was necessary.

However, the motive behind Mangione’s actions has yet to be definitively confirmed. During a December 10 interview on Today, Tisch stated that while the writings showed anti-corporatist sentiments and issues with the healthcare industry, the specific motive remains to be determined as the investigation progresses over the coming weeks and months.

On December 10, Mangione went to a court hearing at the Blair County Courthouse in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. Upon his arrival, NBC News reported that he voiced out to families, “It’s utterly disconnected and an affront to the intelligence of the American public.”

According to the news outlet, Mangione declined extradition to New York and was not granted bail. Consequently, he will continue to be held at Pennsylvania’s SCI Huntingdon prison.

A fundamental principle of American justice is the presumption of innocence, and until you’re proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Luigi Mangione, who graduated from an Ivy League university with a Bachelor of Science in engineering in 2020 and a Master’s degree in engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, is being investigated for the murder of Brian Thompson and several other charges, including forgery and unlawful weapon possession, both in Pennsylvania and New York.

Details about his background were shared by NYPD Chief of Detectives Kenny. Mangione was born and raised in Maryland, but he also has ties to San Francisco. His current address is listed as Honolulu.

Following his arrest, a statement was released by Mangione’s family on X. They stated that they cannot comment on the news reports concerning Luigi Mangione as they only know what they have read in the media. The family expressed their shock and sadness at Luigi’s arrest, offering prayers to the Thompson family and asking for people to pray for all those involved. They are devastated by this turn of events.

Following the news of his tragic death due to gun violence, Brian Thompson’s family expressed their profound sorrow. In a statement obtained by NBC affiliate KARE in Minneapolis on December 5th, they described Brian as a loving, generous, and talented individual who lived life to the fullest and left an indelible mark on many lives. As his loving father to their two sons, he will be deeply missed. The family kindly asks for your condolences and requests privacy during this challenging period.

Additionally, Brian’s wife Paulette disclosed that prior to his passing, he had been receiving threats. Speaking to NBC News on December 5th, she mentioned that there were some people who had been threatening him, though the specifics remained unclear. She suggested that a lack of coverage may have played a role in this unfortunate situation.

As a devoted follower, I feel compelled to echo the sentiments of UnitedHealth Group, the umbrella organization of UnitedHealthcare, following the untimely demise of our esteemed colleague and friend, Thompson. On this tragic day, our corporate headquarters in Minnesota are adorned with flags flying at half-mast as a symbol of our profound grief.

In a subsequent statement on December 5th, UnitedHealth Group shared their gratitude for the outpouring of compassion and support from patients, consumers, health care professionals, associations, government officials, and caring individuals alike. They expressed their sorrow, yet found solace in the kindness shown during this distressing period.

In unity, we stand with UnitedHealth Group in extending our heartfelt condolences to Brian’s family and friends while maintaining our commitment to providing essential health care services during these difficult times.
