Get ready for some exciting updates coming from Universal’s CinemaCon presentation! The third day of the theater owners conference is happening right now in Las Vegas, and on Wednesday (from 3:45 p.m. PT to 5:30 p.m.), Universal Pictures and Focus Features will be taking over the stage at Caesars Palace’s Colosseum theater. They’ll be showcasing their 2025 lineup, which includes highly-anticipated sequels like “Wicked: For Good” and “Jurassic World Rebirth”; Blumhouse’s “M3GAN 2.0”, “The Black Phone 2”, and “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2”; and a live-action remake of “How to Train Your Dragon”, which will be screened in full for attendees before its June premiere in theaters.
A Fresh Start,” as well as the updated release date for “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.” Additionally, they unveiled the four actors who will portray The Beatles in four upcoming biopics directed by Sam Mendes.
On Tuesday, Lionsgate unveiled a series of sequels, such as the fifth installment of the action franchise “John Wick,” starring Keanu Reeves, a spinoff focused on Donnie Yen’s character Caine, an animated prequel titled simply “Wick,” and a new “Hunger Games” prequel movie, in addition to not one but two sequels for the heist film series “Now You See Me.” Meanwhile, Warner Bros. presented their “Big Picture” with sneak peeks from James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman” project and a reboot of “The Cat in the Hat,” but there were few announcements beyond plans for animated movies based on “Tom & Jerry,” “The Flintstones,” and “Looney Tunes.
At Universal, we don’t acquire franchises; instead, we create them from scratch by collaborating with some of the most imaginative, daring, and energetic filmmakers and performers in the business, as stated by Jim Orr, President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution at Universal Pictures. Our 2025 lineup serves as proof of our dedication to cinema that challenges conventions and films that entice audiences to visit our theaters, and then take them on journeys they never thought possible.
After the unveiling of the Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes suspenseful movie titled “Drop” on April 11, featuring Meghann Fahy from “The White Lotus” as a widowed mother being harassed by mysterious phone messages, Universal Studios is planning to premiere the live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon” in cinemas starting June 13. This fresh take on the movie will be directed by Dean DeBlois, who helmed the original trilogy.
Following the debut of the initial M3GAN 2.0 teaser during the Grammys in February, Universal is set to provide an update about the upcoming A.I. teenage villain project, a collaboration between Blumhouse and Atomic Monster (June 27). Additionally, Jurassic World Rebirth is making a comeback on July 2, helmed by director Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and scriptwriter David Koepp (original Jurassic Park), with the story taking us to the most perilous location on Earth: an abandoned island research facility teeming with the deadliest creatures ever known. The action-packed sequel features Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali as a rescue team who must navigate this treacherous terrain.
DreamWorks Animation’s movie “The Bad Guys 2” (releasing August 11) boasts an impressive cast including Sam Rockwell, Anthony Ramos, Awkwafina, and Craig Robinson. They are joined by Danielle Brooks, Maria Bakalova, and Natasha Lyonne as The Bad Girls. This action-packed sequel is expected to command attention, preceding DreamWorks’ “Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie” (set for release on September 26).
In addition, you can expect to see the following movies in cinemas this summer:
1. On August 15, “Nobody 2” from 87North, with Bob Odenkirk reprising his role as Hutch Mansell, a regular guy turned assassin, produced by Blumhouse.
2. Starting October 17, “Black Phone 2” returns with Ethan Hawke and Mason Thames answering the call once more, also from Blumhouse.
3. Lastly, on December 5, “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” will continue its animatronic terror, directed by Emma Tammi, who is also working on the 2023 “FNAF” movie, based on Scott Cawthon’s video game series.
Excitedly speaking as a movie enthusiast who adores all things Oz, I’m thrilled to share that Universal is heading back to the enchanting land for “Wicked 2”. This highly-anticipated sequel follows last year’s hit musical sensation, “Wicked: For Good” (Nov. 21). Much like its predecessor, it features Oscar-nominated talents Cynthia Erivo reprising her role as Elphaba and Ariana Grande stepping into the magical shoes of Glinda – aka the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. Can’t wait to see what adventures await us in Oz!
