Following Director Leigh Whannell’s exhilarating revamp of Universal Monsters through his gripping adaptation of The Invisible Man, he endeavored to rejuvenate another timeless monster in the Wolf Man. Regrettably, the Wolf Man didn’t fare well at box offices when it hit cinemas earlier this year; however, it’s now poised for a second chance as it prepares for its streaming premiere. As reported by Deadline, starting from Friday, April 18th, the Wolf Man will only be available to stream on Peacock.
For the very first time, you can now stream “Wolf Man” without leaving your home, as it’s been made available on streaming platforms such as Apple and Amazon for rental or purchase. However, to watch it free of charge, all you need is a subscription to Peacock.
The movie “Wolf Man” premiered in January, but it didn’t do well. Critics gave it mainly unfavorable reviews, and its earnings at the box office were disappointing, totaling just $34.1 million worldwide. This is in stark contrast to 2020’s “The Invisible Man,” which was widely acclaimed and managed to earn $144.5 million against a much smaller budget of $7 million.
In a now-removed tweet, film producer Jason Blum expressed his disappointment about the movie “Wolf Man” underperforming at the box office. He posted an image of himself looking displeased in his car. When “Wolf Man” was initially released during the extended Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, it came in third place, with “Mufasa: The Lion King,” which continued to do well over Christmas, and the comedy “One of Them Days” taking the top two spots.
It’s intriguing to observe how the movie “Wolf Man” performs on Peacock, given its underperformance at the box office doesn’t necessarily predict its current reception. Many films that failed commercially have found success on streaming platforms. For instance, “The Marvels,” which grossed only $206.1 million globally, gained significant acclaim after its release on Disney+, even topping Nielsen’s charts. The convenience of watching something at home for free can make viewers more inclined to try a movie with mixed reviews, even out of curiosity. So, it’s possible that more people might decide to watch “Wolf Man” now.
Leonard Whannell has shown enthusiasm about creating another Universal Monsters movie, considering Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as a potential choice. As of now, this project hasn’t been officially approved, and it remains unclear if the performance of The Wolf Man in cinemas had any bearing on that decision. If the film succeeds significantly on Peacock, Universal might pursue Whannell’s subsequent concept. Given Whannell’s strong body of work, including the underappreciated sci-fi film Upgrade, some believe that the success of The Wolf Man was just a brief setback.
