Unlock 244% More FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 with RTX 5080’s DLSS 4 Magic!

Following my review of the RTX 5080, NVIDIA’s latest high-end GeForce graphics card, the highly-anticipated feature DLSS 4 was introduced in the popular open-world RPG Cyberpunk 2077. Notably, this feature has been enhanced with a novel “Transformer” model for its image upscaling technology. Gamers fortunate enough to own one of the recent RTX 50 Series GPUs or even the high-performing but pricey RTX 5090, can experience a significant increase in their frames-per-second (FPS) by up to 2x, 3x, or 4x with Multi-Frame Generation (MFG.)

Normally, inserting extra “dummy frames” can cause input delay, which was noticeable in AMD’s Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) iterations. However, employing NVIDIA Reflex (or Radeon Anti-Lag for AMD users) could potentially eliminate any lag or latency during gameplay, and the performance I’ve witnessed with DLSS 4 Mesh Shaders is truly remarkable. If you invest in a top-tier RTX 50 Series GPU and venture into Night City on PC, this is the kind of experience you can anticipate.

Cyberpunk 2077 with RTX 5080 + DLSS 4 MFG

Without a doubt, enabling Multi-Frame Generation at 4 times in Cyberpunk 2077 with the latest update provides approximately a 2.44x performance improvement with minimal changes in temperature. It’s almost as if it’s sorcery or science fiction, but its effectiveness is indisputable. However, Multi-Frame Generation does have its constraints, and they become noticeable when maximizing in-game graphics settings. In my trials, I opt for the ‘Ray Tracing: Overdrive’ preset with path tracing turned on, cranking up the real-time visuals to their highest possible level at your chosen screen resolution.

I prefer playing games at a resolution of 1440p (2560 x 1440), as this is where the game operates at its highest settings. However, it rarely maintains a steady 60 frames per second for long periods. To be more accurate, when running Cyberpunk at maximum settings on an RTX 5080, the frame rate hovers around 40 frames per second, similar to the Steam Deck. NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 upscaling technology can help you reach 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution with improved visual clarity and reduced smears and tearing on distant objects, but this is what you should generally expect from the game’s native performance.

In Cyberpunk 2077, I consistently achieve over 135 frames per second (FPS) with DLSS 4 Multi-Frame Generation (MFG) at 4x. However, there are occasional minor glitches when navigating the game environment. To eliminate these issues and ensure a steady 60 FPS, it’s often suggested to reduce some visual effects. This has been a common advice for “fake frames” technology since its creation, as achieving a smooth experience even with everything set to maximum can be enjoyable, despite many high-end graphics settings showing negligible differences or placebo effects.

RTX 5090 hits 60 FPS at 1440p without MFG

Speaking of the $1,999 RTX 5090, one would expect such a high price tag to allow any game to run flawlessly at maximum settings without any hiccups at 60 frames per second (FPS). In reality, this is achievable at 1440p resolution. If you’re aiming for real-time 4K with this exceptional visual quality, you’ll need to use DLSS 4 upscaling to match your Ultra High Definition (UHD) display, as some scenes may dip slightly below the 60 FPS standard, but generally, it offers a smooth gaming experience that only the most advanced, extravagantly priced graphics cards can provide.

Absolutely, I’ll pass. I prefer sticking with DLSS 4 and Multi-Frame Gen for a playable frame rate and to save some money. Although my RTX 3060 12GB GPU is quite close to the intended audience, I find that the significant improvement offered by these ultra-expensive visual features tends to lose its appeal quickly. If you’re using an RTX 2080 / Ti / SUPER, this is roughly what you might experience from a current-generation offering if you manage to find an RTX 5080 in stock someday.
