For subscribers of Nintendo Switch Online, there’s a fresh, free download on its way that takes you back to 2010 and the height of the Wii era. By then, the Wii had been around for four years, having launched in 2006. Although excitement around the console was starting to wane by this point, it was still two years before the arrival of the Wii U and one year before the launch of the 3DS. Essentially, in 2010, the Wii remained Nintendo’s main platform.
2010 saw Super Mario Galaxy 2 as the standout Wii release, often hailed as one of the greatest games ever made. In contrast to its shadow but still a significant Nintendo title for that year was Donkey Kong Country Returns. Notably, Super Mario Galaxy 2 has yet to be remastered or ported, neither on the Wii U nor the Nintendo Switch. However, Donkey Kong Country Returns will be available on the Nintendo Switch starting tomorrow, January 16, 2025.
Before the port brings about the initial significant Nintendo Switch launch in 2024, Nintendo is offering a complimentary treat for all Nintendo enthusiasts eagerly waiting for the re-release. To be more precise, alongside the release of Donkey Kong Country Returns HD on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo has unveiled “personalized symbols” of the game. These symbols feature characters such as Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, and others.
If you don’t have a Nintendo Switch Online membership, you won’t be able to use these icons, as they are only available for users with an active subscription. They cost between five and ten Platinum Points.
For those who are eager, here’s a heads-up about the rollout schedule. The releases will happen in four consecutive weekly batches. The first one starts on January 15 and ends on January 22. The second one follows from January 22 to January 29. The third wave takes place from January 29 to February 5, and the final and fourth wave runs from February 5 to February 12.
After being obtained, every icon can be kept permanently without the need for a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. To clarify, having a Nintendo Switch Online subscription is necessary to gain access to these free Wii offerings, but you don’t have to maintain the subscription in order to hold onto them once they are claimed.
It’s important to mention that Nintendo Switch Online icons usually don’t reappear in a second edition of a game. When they do, you usually need to own the game again to download the related icons for the second time. Therefore, Nintendo enthusiasts should act quickly during each release wave as once it ends, these icons will disappear and may not return permanently.
