In the game The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, a mission called Vahtecen’s Secret is given by the Mages Guild, led by Raminus Polus. He requests that the protagonist assists Irlav Jarol in uncovering the mysteries hidden within an ancient Ayleid Ruin named Vahtecen. However, due to Irlav’s commitments, he delegates this task to a junior mage, Kaleel, who happens to be an Argonian.

Kaleel and her assistant, Denel, can’t figure out the mysterious symbols etched on the walls of the Ruins, believing these markings might reveal the code for moving the marble column that barricades the way into the deeper ruins of Vahtecen. They’re written in a language they don’t recognize, and understanding their meaning is crucial to solving the puzzle surrounding the stone pillar.

Vahtecen’s Secret Pillar Puzzle Solution

  • Enter Vahtecen Ayleid Ruin and talk to Skaleel, the Argonian. She will tell you that she’s had no success deciphering the curious pillar that blocks the entrance to the deeper levels of the ruins. She will give you the Vahtecen Ruins Key to progress deeper into the dungeon.
  • Use the key on the door on the far side of the room and go down the corridor.
  • Talk to Denel, the mage researcher standing by the entrance to the pillar puzzle room. He will mention that he needs an ‘Ayleid Reference,’ something to cross-reference in order to understand the Ayleid language on the tablet inscriptions inside the pillar room.
  • Go back to Skaleel and repeat what Denel told you. She will acquiesce and hand over an Ayleid Reference book.
  • Return to Denel and give him the book.
  • Go into the puzzle room and interact with all four inscriptions on the walls. There is one in front of every red gem.

    • Return to Denel and select the dialogue options ‘Translation.’

  • He will offer the following translation for each of the inscriptions:
    • Av molag anyammis: Fire Spell
    • Av mafre nagaia: Frost Spell
    • Magicka loria: Damage Magicka Spell
    • Magicka sila: Fortify Magicka Spell

Armed with all this data, you can deduce the solution to Vahtecen’s Secret pillar riddle. Apply four spells on the pillar as indicated by the Ayleid engravings. The sequence of the spells, moving clockwise, is:

1. Fire spell
2. Frost spell
3. Damage Magicka spell
4. Fortify Magicka spell

To cast spells effectively, they should belong to either the Touch or Target category. For instance, a spell like ‘Boost Personal Magicka’ won’t work. If you’re not familiar with these spells yet, you can find a chest packed with various scrolls hidden behind Denel. Among them, you’ll discover Fire (Flare), Frost (Snowball), Drain Magicka (Sever Magicka), and Boost Magicka (Elevate Magicka). You can use these scrolls as substitutes for learned spells to accomplish the same goal and solve the puzzling pillar riddle.

Instead, focus on enchanting the central pillar, rather than the writings on the walls or the red gems.

Once you’ve performed the spells in the sequence provided, the pillar will collapse, revealing the dungeon entrance. Be cautious before descending, for the place teems with Ghosts. To inflict damage on them, you can either use silver weapons or enchanted ones; spells will also work effectively.

In the depths of the cave, you will come across a vast chamber containing an elevated stone platform. At the farthest point in this room is an activation button. Activate it to reveal a staircase, which leads up to the platform where you can retrieve the Ancient Elven Helm. Return this artifact to Irlav Jarol, then head to Raminus Polus in the Arch-Mage Tower’s main hall to conclude the quest and receive your new title as Conjurer in the Mages Guild, along with the Robes of the Conjurer.
