Unlock the Magic: LEGO Hogwarts Castle’s Main Tower is a Must-Have for Fans!

For devoted Harry Potter fans, there’s no scarcity of LEGO sets inspired by the magical world, with the first tribute debuting in 2001 alongside the premiere of the first movie, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” As the Wizarding World has grown, so too have the LEGO sets, covering every nook and cranny of the franchise. Recently, LEGO has focused on revisiting the legendary Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, with a variety of models available in different scales. However, starting from June 2024, LEGO is pushing the scale even further to make the experience more captivating by including significant areas within the castle. The most recent addition to Hogwarts, “Hogwarts Castle: The Main Tower (#76454),” recreates scenes and locations from the original film in a build that’s as enjoyable to interact with as it is to construct.

The Main Tower, a formidable structure made up of 2,135 parts, is an impressive challenge for any builder over the age of majority, with estimated construction time ranging from 6 to 7 hours. Designed primarily for younger fans, this set comes equipped with 12 mini-figures, featuring characters such as Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Neville Longbottom, Professor Kettleburn, Nearly Headless Nick, Albus Dumbledore, and additional Hogwarts students. Animal companions like Fluffy, Hedwig, and Fawkes are also included in this set.

Starting with the first three bags from this set gives you a clear outline of the entire structure, even though there’s much more to explore beyond just setting up the base. The first three bags include mini-figures of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, each bag containing detailed builds representing key scenes from the end of The Sorcerer’s Stone. You’ll have fun constructing Harry’s chase for flying keys, watching Ron play Wizard’s Chess, and observing Hermione entangled in vines. Beginning with three distinct, fully-built structures provides a rewarding start to the project, as other large sets may initially focus on building an unclear foundation or infrastructure.

The rooms are so intricately designed that they seem like standalone mini-sets, which might be too much for younger enthusiasts at a glance. Yet, this arrangement provides a natural break in the building process. Once completed, fans can immediately begin playing with these renowned locations, making it an ideal spot to take a breather and enjoy the experience.

Bags 4 to 8 are utilized to assemble and complete the main floors of this tower’s structure, which encompasses three full rooms and Fluffy’s room. Fluffy is a beloved character from “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone“, but he appears even cuter in LEGO form compared to how he looks in the films. The LEGO version of Fluffy stands on a trap door that leads to the vines where Hermione falls, with a clever design incorporating a vine mechanism that opens and closes to mimic wizards falling through the floor as it opens.

In my role as a dedicated LEGO builder, I took on the challenge of constructing the cozy Gryffindor common room, complete with flags, beds, and plush seating for relaxation. Although it may not be as elaborate or intricate as other sections of the Harry Potter set, I aimed to capture the essence of the room without resorting to excessive complexity. The pièce de résistance of this section is undeniably the “Fat Lady” portrait, serving as a gateway between the common room and the stairwell. For any aficionado of the Wizarding World series, the enchanting hidden passageways and secrets within Hogwarts are what make it so thrilling to envision visiting. LEGO could have opted for an easier approach to create this transition, but instead chose to remain faithful to the source material.

Bags 12 through 16 play a crucial role in creating one of the Main Tower’s most iconic features: the revolving staircase. Just as the Gryffindor common room can’t be perfectly replicated, LEGO simplifies the essence of this location to capture its spirit accurately. While we may only receive three sets of stairs instead of numerous ones found in Hogwarts, the way these stairs spin and rotate, combined with the wall portraits, effectively convey the feel of the moving staircase.

Atop the staircase lies Dumbledore’s office, subtly incorporating essential elements without excessive elaboration. Items like the Sorting Hat, Pensieve, and Sword of Gryffindor adorn his office, not ordinary wizarding trinkets. Above his office are bags 20 and 21 that build the attic and the tower’s roof. To heighten your excitement, you can create the Mirror of Erised, revealing one’s deepest longings. You receive stickers to depict Harry alone on one side, then rotate to show Harry with his parents. The construction concludes poignantly with a significant artifact from the Wizarding World, fostering an emotional bond between builders and audiences.

For those who’ve already assembled the Great Hall set from last year, this Main Tower set can be linked up to create a larger Hogwarts experience. With features like hidden trap doors, moving staircases, numerous mini-figures, and removable lower levels, the Main Tower will captivate not only experienced builders who appreciate the attention to detail, but will offer endless play opportunities for younger enthusiasts as they recreate memorable scenes from the Harry Potter series. LEGO continues to excel in its craft, especially when reinventing classic locations, and the Hogwarts Castle: The Main Tower is no different. If you’re interested in adding it to your collection, pre-orders are currently being accepted at the LEGO Shop for $259.99 with a release date scheduled for June 1st.
