Unlock the MCU: Must-Watch Films Before Thunderbolts Strikes!

The upcoming movie, marking the conclusion of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 5, promises an exhilarating journey. Titled “Thunderbolts”, this film brings together Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, Wyatt Russell’s John Walker (U.S. Agent), Olga Kurylenko’s Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost, and David Harbour’s Red Guardian. Their mission involves confronting a modified version of Lewis Pullman’s Bob, also known as Sentry. However, they must first navigate the manipulative strategies of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Although she appeared in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, her role there was not about assembling this specific group of semi-heroes. Instead, it involved imprisoning her ex-husband for collaborating with the Wakandans.

What are some Marvel Cinatic Universe (MCU) movies and a Disney+ series that you should watch before Thunderbolts is released in theaters on May 2nd? You might want to catch up on three films and one series, either for the first time or as a refresher.

Black Widow

In the Thunderbolts team, there are seven members if you count de Fontaine but not Sentry. The 2021 film Black Widow introduced three of these members: Yelena Belova (played by Pugh), Red Guardian (played by Harbour), and Taskmaster (played by Kurylenko, although it seems like Taskmaster may not be a major character in the Thunderbolts). Red Guardian and Taskmaster were last seen in Black Widow, while Yelena Belova appeared in another 2021 project called Hawkeye.

The highly anticipated return of these characters, following a gap of four years, will be brought to us by Thunderbolts*. If the whispers are true, the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film is expected to bring fans back in touch with Rachel Weisz’s character Melina Vostokoff, who made her debut in Black Widow. To enhance the significance of the 2021 movie as it builds towards Thunderbolts*, a connection between de Fontaine and Belova is hinted at in the post-credits sequence of Black Widow.

Ant-Man and the Wasp

Almost every project on this list premiered during the 2020s, but it’s been a long wait for many Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans to see characters like Ghost from Thunderbolts again, as her first and last appearance in the MCU was in 2018’s Ant-Man and The Wasp. It’s particularly exciting to see Ghost back because she wasn’t your typical one-dimensional villain often found in the MCU. Instead, she offered a unique take on the antagonist role.

In addition to being the platform where Lawrence Fishburne’s character, Bill Foster, made his debut, Ant-Man and The Wasp also hints at his potential appearance in Thunderbolts, similar to Weisz’s character from Black Widow.

(*Note: I have assumed that “Thunderbolts” is the correct title, as it is a confirmed upcoming Marvel film featuring characters with checkered pasts.)

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

To date, Wyatt Russell’s character John Walker has appeared in just one Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) production, specifically the Disney+ series “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.” This series is crucial to understanding John Walker, a key figure in the Thunderbolts team. Moreover, it is within this miniseries that de Fontaine enlists him for the team.

As a film critic, I’d say: If you want to understand Bucky Barnes’ emotional state before delving into the events of “Thunderbolts,” this Marvel Cinematic Universe movie is your best bet. However, there’s one particular scene involving Barnes in an upcoming movie that carries even greater significance.

Captain America: Brave New World

It’s essential to watch “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” before “Thunderbolts*“, but the events in the latter have a more immediate connection with “Captain America: Brave New World “, specifically one scene from that movie.

As the movie nears its conclusion, Sam Wilson finds himself disheartened and almost defeated, staring at an injured Joaquin Torres. However, his morale receives a boost when none other than his partner Bucky Barnes appears on the scene. It is here that Barnes announces he’s running for Congress. Although it seems he triumphs in this election based on the previews for Thunderbolts, there are hints of a later setback – maybe even a permanent one – that forces him to join forces with Yelena, John Walker, Red Guardian, Taskmaster, and Ghost.

Sam Wilson is down in the dumps at the end of the film, looking at an injured friend. But his mood picks up when Bucky Barnes shows up. It turns out that Barnes is running for Congress, and he wins according to the previews for Thunderbolts. However, there’s also a scene where he looks sad in a courtroom, suggesting something bad happens that makes him work with Yelena, John Walker, Red Guardian, Taskmaster, and Ghost.

Thunderbolts* lands in theaters on May 2nd.
