David Fein on the 2022 Star Trek: The Motion Picture Director’s Edition Restoration
Many viewers are aware that the initial release of the movie “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” was missing some parts due to distribution issues beyond director Robert Wise’s control, forcing him to trim his post-production work. This left the film aesthetically incomplete in its theatrical form. Later in 2001, Paramount collaborated with Wise to release a Director’s Edition that filled these gaps. Unfortunately, this version was never converted into Blu-ray format at the time, and once again, the Director’s Edition became unavailable. David Fein, who had worked on the original 2001 Director’s Edition and was a friend of Wise, recognized the importance of preserving Wise’s original complete vision for the film.
Back in 2022, I, as a movie critic, had a heart-to-heart conversation with the late Robert Wise at his home. Sitting comfortably in his quaint coffee nook, he looked me straight in the eye and shared his concern about his impending departure. He expressed his wish to stay, but then asked for my promise. “No matter what,” he said, “you must ensure that ‘The Director’s Edition’ continues to thrive. It’s crucial that we one day recover our negative, for it is essential that my legacy endures, and the world sees this film as it was meant to be – not the theatrical version, but the one that truly reflects its essence.
2022 saw the release of an updated Director’s Edition by Fein, which has been incorporated into this Blu-ray set.
