In the Harry Potter film series, it is well-known that some crucial scenes from the books were omitted, such as the scene in “The Order of the Phoenix” that sheds light on Gilderoy Lockhart’s fate. First appearing in “The Chamber of Secrets”, Lockhart was a boastful wizard who gained fame for his numerous acts of supposed bravery. However, during his tenure as the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts, people began to question both his courage and honesty.
It emerged that Lockhart falsified his past accomplishments by concealing the truth and claiming credit for the bravery of other wizards. He even tried to deceive Harry and Ron in the Chamber of Secrets, though his scheme unraveled and instead of erasing their memories, it was his own that were wiped out. In the movie, Lockhart’s further fate beyond memory loss is not shown or explained, but the books give a more detailed account of what happened to him afterward.
Harry & The Weasleys See Gilderoy Lockhart At St. Mungo’s Hospital In Order Of The Phoenix
Lockhart Is A Patient At The Hospital
During the occurrences of “The Order of the Phoenix,” Harry Potter and the Weasley clan encounter Gilderoy Lockhart in St. Mungo’s Hospital while paying a visit to Arthur Weasley, who had been admitted after being injured by Nagini.
In a different phrase, we can say: Lockhart doesn’t recognize Harry, Ron, or anyone familiar from his past. Strangely, the hospital staff speak of him warmly as if his past misdeeds were never exposed to the public. They comment that although he can’t remember his identity, he appears to recollect being well-known and one of the first skills he regains is writing in cursive to sign his name once more. Ron felt remorseful since it was his wand that malfunctioned and harmed Lockhart, but Harry showed less compassion.
As a movie buff, I can’t forget that Lockhart attempted to erase our memories, so whatever transpired was his doing. It didn’t make things easier when Lockhart, even with memory loss, still seemed much the same. He remained arrogant and if he had remembered his actions, he probably wouldn’t have felt remorseful.
St. Mungo’s Is Also Where Neville Longbottom’s Parents Are
The Longbottoms Reside There After Bellatrix Tortured Them
Despite Lockhart’s unfortunate fate, it is important to acknowledge that he was indeed culpable for his actions and not an admirable individual. Meanwhile, Harry, Hermione, and the Weasleys encountered a heartbreaking scene – they found their fellow student Neville Longbottom, accompanied by his grandmother, paying respects at the graves of his parents, Alice and Frank Longbottom. Tragically, when Neville was still an infant, the Longbottoms were subjected to unimaginable cruelty at the hands of Bellatrix Lestrange, leading them to the brink of insanity.
Frank and Alice were experienced members of the initial Order of the Phoenix, engaging in combat against Voldemort during the First Wizarding Conflict. Bellatrix, accompanied by her spouse Rodolphus, her brother-in-law Rabastan, and Barty Crouch Jr., resorted to using the Agonizing Hex on the Longbottoms to extract information. However, they remained tight-lipped, leading to their hospitalization at St. Mungo’s. In numerous aspects, it was a punishment more severe than what befell the Potters.
What made it even more heartbreaking was Neville’s embarrassment at having his friends witness him with his parents, but fortunately, his grandmother intervened and encouraged him to take pride in his parents and appreciate their courage. In the end, Neville demonstrated that he indeed held them in high regard and proved to be brave as well when he utilized Gryffindor’s sword to slay Nagini during the Battle of Hogwarts.
