In the world of “The Vampire Diaries,” the quality of a television series is often determined by its villains. Over the span of the original series, its two spinoffs (“The Originals” and “Legacies”), viewers had an abundance of detestable yet intriguing characters to root against. These villains consistently stirred up trouble for the main characters, sometimes even winning over audiences in the process. For instance, Damon Salvatore initially played an antagonistic role but later became a fan favorite, eventually leading to his own show. Similarly, Klaus Mikaelson was once considered the main adversary before becoming everyone’s beloved character and receiving his own series.
Although the villains provided the necessary tension and emotional rollercoaster to keep both the heroes and viewers engaged, they weren’t the true sources of malevolence in Mystic Fall or New Orleans. Instead, the root cause of most problems within the Vampire Diaries universe can be traced back to poor parenting.
Mikael, the Worst of Them All
We might as well begin by discussing the most abhorrent character among them, Klaus’ father, Mikael. From the get-go, this fellow is appalling. Following the presumed demise of his daughter Freya, Mikael turned into a harsh and severe father, even crossing into cruelty to teach them survival skills. He was especially harsh towards young Niklaus, physically punishing him for trivial offenses, under the guise that it would make him stronger. It later emerged that Klaus wasn’t actually Mikael’s biological son but the result of an affair Esther had with a werewolf named Ansel. When Klaus first transformed, Mikael labeled him as a “monster” and an “abomination,” eventually persuading Esther to suppress his werewolf nature by binding it.
In “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals,” Mikael’s harsh mistreatment of Klaus contributes significantly to Klaus’s transformation into both a villain and a flawed anti-hero. However, it extends beyond that. Mikael himself becomes a vampire and hunts other vampires, focusing particularly on his own children, especially Klaus, whom he believes is responsible for the destruction of his family. As such, Mikael poses a significant danger not only to Klaus and the rest of the Mikaelsons but also to all vampires in general, making him a truly malevolent figure.
Giuseppe Salvatore Also Sucked
In the world of “The Vampire Diaries,” one notorious character who stands out as a villain is Giuseppe Salvatore. Originally one of Mystic Falls’ founders, Giuseppe was a despicable man from the beginning. He was an alcoholic, dominated his wife, Lily, and abused his son Damon, while favoring Stefan. However, it’s important to note that he didn’t truly care for either of his sons. When Giuseppe uncovered vampires in Mystic Falls, he became obsessed with their eradication. In a twisted move, he used his own son, Stefan, to out Katherine Pierce as a vampire. When Stefan and Damon attempted to save her from being trapped in a tomb with 26 other vampires destined for death, Giuseppe shot them both, preferring they were dead rather than considered “traitors.
The actions of a poor father named Giuseppe have far-reaching consequences, primarily affecting his son Stefan. You see, due to Katherine’s blood in his system, Stefan was on the verge of becoming a vampire. In an attempt to kill him, Giuseppe tried to stake Stefan, but failed and ended up stabbed with his own stake. As a result, Stefan licked his father’s blood off his fingers, marking the first human blood he consumed. This experience, combined with how Giuseppe treated him and his brother during their lives, made it challenging for Stefan to manage his bloodlust as a vampire, leading to numerous difficulties.
There Are No Shortage of Bad Parents
In the universe of “The Vampire Diaries,” Mikael and Giuseppe Salvatore stand out as particularly poor fathers whose poor parenting and overall terrible behavior contribute significantly to the struggles faced by the show’s heroes. However, they are far from the only problematic parents in this story. Tyler Lockwood’s father, Richard, is also quite abhorrent. As a former mayor of Mystic Falls, he was physically abusive towards his son and exhibited bullying behavior that undeniably impacted his son’s conduct. Moreover, Richard was willing to endanger innocent people in his relentless pursuit of vampires. It’s ironic that he met his demise at the hands of one of the very creatures he sought to destroy. Elena Gilbert’s biological parents also deserve mention for their poor parenting skills, with John Gilbert being a particularly active participant in the anti-vampire movement.
In the series “Legacies”, many characters struggle with poor parenting. Some have parents who mistreat or abandon them, such as Landon whose father is a monster called Malivore. Even Hope Mikaelson experiences this as her father Klaus becomes a kind of ‘bad parent’ due to his past actions affecting her. However, the character most affected by this issue is MG. In “Legacies”, Milton Greasley, or MG, has a mother who kept his transformation into a vampire secret from his father, leading him to believe he was rejected because of religious reasons. In reality, she hid his death from his father. When MG finally reveals himself, his father accepts briefly but reacts negatively upon learning about the vampirism. This revelation devastates MG, who uses compulsion to make his father forget. Overwhelmed, MG transforms into a ripper and accidentally kills Landon. Although everything eventually resolves for MG – he stops being a ripper, and Landon is revived as a phoenix – it’s clear that the poor parenting, especially from MG’s mother, has a lasting negative impact on him and continues the less-than-ideal family dynamics seen throughout “The Vampire Diaries” universe. In essence, who needs villains when you have bad parents?
