The movie version of “Until Dawn” has been released, and you might be curious about how it ties to the PlayStation game if you haven’t played it yet. “Until Dawn” is a horror game that debuted on PlayStation in 2015 and remains popular even today. It was a significant title for the PS4 era and has been updated for both the PS5 and PC versions. This game helped establish Supermassive Games as a notable developer and sparked a trend of choose-your-own-adventure style horror games, emphasizing the use of Hollywood actors and striving for cinematic quality. It was extremely successful, and there may now be plans for a sequel, hinted at by a new ending in the remake.
Spoilers for Until Dawn follow below.
In the interim, enthusiasts can temporarily satisfy their craving with the new “Until Dawn” movie, which serves as a tantalizing prelude rather than a reenactment of the game. This standalone story appears to unfold within the game’s universe, where a youthful group finds themselves trapped in a desolate house and entangled in a time loop. Each time they meet their demise, they are compelled to relive the night anew, encountering fresh, uncharted terrors such as monsters, murderers, witches, and other sinister entities. To escape this cycle, they must endure until dawn. It’s quite unlike the game in every aspect outside of a group of young adults being hunted by monsters and killers in an isolated location. Nevertheless, it shares a significant bond with the “Until Dawn” video game.
The Until Dawn Movie Is Apparently a Prequel to the Video Game
One key link between the “Until Dawn” video game and movie is the character portrayed by Peter Stormare, Dr. Alan J. Hill. In the game, Dr. Hill serves as a somewhat enigmatic narrative guide, cautioning you about how your choices influence the storyline, yet he also functions as Josh’s (Rami Malek) psychiatrist in the story.
In the Until Dawn movie, Stormare’s character, Dr. Hill, leads you to question whether he is merely a hallucination for Josh or something more otherworldly. This is because his role in the film suggests that he is conducting experiments on the cast, using them as subjects for horrors. His goal seems to be understanding the reactions of trauma victims and whether intense stress and trauma could transform them into wendigos, creatures from the game.
In the final scene of the “Until Dawn” film, Dr. Hill explains everything to the protagonist, Clover, in his peculiar, isolated office from the video game. Here, it’s revealed that he can monitor everyone within the house via camera feeds and has a file on Josh with an image resembling Rami Malek attached. The intentional mention of this being the Rami Malek version of the character suggests that the movie is intentionally linking itself back to the game.
As I sat there, stunned by Clover’s actions and her escape with our group, I thought Dr. Hill had met his end. But in a shocking twist, the very last scene showed Dr. Hill was alive! His camera feed switched to reveal a cabin nestled in the woods, reminiscent of the setting in the Until Dawn game. It appeared that Josh’s file lay on Dr. Hill’s desk, hinting at a new experiment he was about to embark on. This revelation suggested that the movie was actually a prequel to the video game I thought I knew so well.
In addition to certain related themes like the wendigos, the Psycho Killer, and a mining town tragedy serving as central elements, there’s an intriguing possibility that both the movie “Until Dawn” and the game might be set in the same locale. This shared setting may experience unusual changes due to some unseen supernatural force. Furthermore, Dr. Hill possesses multiple ID cards for various hospitals/locations, implying he travels extensively or perhaps a mysterious entity is involved. The movie leaves many questions unanswered, suggesting that it too grapples with understanding how everything intertwines, but it seems clear that the film and game are closely linked.
