Five years prior to the original anime, “My Hero Academia: Vigilantes” revolves around protagonist Koichi Haimawari, a college student who juggles his studies and part-time work at a convenience store. By night, he assumes the role of “Nice Guy,” offering aid to citizens in minor predicaments such as retrieving lost items or providing directions, utilizing his Quirk Slide and Glide abilities. However, his life takes an unexpected turn when he crosses paths with Knuckeduster, a vigilante, leading him into something far greater – the central focus being a drug that amplifies Quirks.
In the premiere of “My Hero Academia: Vigilantes“, viewers are made aware of an illicit substance called Trigger. Initially designed to boost and intensify weak superpowers (Quirks), its misuse for illegal activities resulted in a nationwide ban in Japan. Nowadays, it’s produced and trafficked by several criminal networks, typically distributed as pre-filled syringes intended for neck injection. Upon use, the drug temporarily amplifies the user’s Quirk but comes with a drawback: it weakens their mental faculties.
How Trigger Ties In to the Original Series
The story revolves around a potent and risky version of the drug known as Ideo Trigger. Unlike regular Trigger, this variant intensifies Quirks but also triggers a drastic physical change in the user, causing them to lose control and behave aggressively, turning them into instant antagonists. Fortunately, there’s a telltale sign that heroes (and vigilantes) can spot to identify Ideo Trigger abusers. Since the drug affects the user’s blood circulation, it causes the tongue color of an addict to change from pink to black. This shift in tongue color is often a clear indicator whenever a Trigger user loses control during a rampage.
However, it’s important to note that the spin-off of MHA isn’t the initial introduction of this drug for fans. In fact, in the main My Hero Academia series, the audience is first exposed to this drug during the Shie Hassaikai Arc. Despite his disdain for Quirks, Overhaul was involved in dealing Trigger, a precursor drug, to finance his research on the Quirk-Destroying Bullet. This makes Trigger a fundamental drug, as it plays a role in the creation of all subsequent Quirk-related drugs and significantly impacts the overall plotline of the series.
Trigger’s Role in MHA Vigilantes So Far
Toward the close of the inaugural episode of My Hero Academia: Vigilantes , an enigmatic individual with a ponytail and notable facial scar gives three bullies who had earlier bothered Koichi vials of Trigger. Later, as Knuckleduster, Pop Step, and Koichi patrol the city looking for shady behavior, they cross paths with an apparently harmless office worker named Mario. However, in the second installment of the series, it’s unveiled that Mario had been secretly using Trigger, and his power, Playtime, is amplified by it.
By the end of the second episode, the Vigilantes team had already encountered four villains empowered by the Trigger substance. In the third episode, they came across an additional two Instant Villains, and it became clear that these incidents were not isolated events. A mysterious man seems to be distributing the drug without charge, although initially it was thought he intended to hook users on the drug and then exploit them financially later. However, there might be something much more sinister at play.
Because the drug turns people into instant troublemakers instantly, there could be someone intentionally disseminating it to sow disorder for their own advantage. And when we discuss manipulating events from behind the scenes, many “My Hero Academia” fans can’t help but recall All For One. This villain has previously been associated with Trigger, although it remains unclear if he will have a larger impact in “Vigilantes.
