In the concept art for “Avengers: Infinity War,” Thanos’ ancestors from the planet Titan were depicted. The villainous character Thanos, played by Josh Brolin, was the main antagonist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Infinity Saga, and his background was delved into more deeply during “Infinity War.” This was particularly during his mission to collect the six Infinity Stones. Important details such as the revelation of his father’s identity (A’lars) and the exposure of Titan as his home planet were unveiled. A glimpse of what Titan looked like during its prosperous period was given in a scene from Phase 3, but there was no additional exploration of its inhabitants.
Marvel Studios concept artist Jerad S. Marantz posted on Instagram some concept artwork depicting the inhabitants of Titan from the movie “Avengers: Infinity War”, offering a unique glance into some of Thanos’ forebears.
The drawings depicted certain human-like creatures residing on Titan, adorned in clothing suggesting nobility and sophistication.
Marantz’s design hinted at figures that resemble Titan warriors, as they possess a larger, more muscular physique.
This art piece showcases figures believed to belong to Titan’s royal household, suggested by their regal clothing and noble headgear that symbolize high rank.
Additional visuals displayed a figure resembling an elderly resident of Titan, categorized as such due to its hooded human-like appearance.
Alongside the post, Marantz talked about the “fun assignment” of designing the citizens of Titan:
I found this task quite enjoyable! During my work on Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, I received an unexpectedly swift assignment to create the inhabitants of Titan, Thanos’s home planet. This required a wide range of characters and classes, which was challenging yet exciting. To get started, I decided to do some quick sketches, even though it wasn’t something I had done before. Initially, I thought I would develop these designs further into models, but it turned out that the initial sketches were sufficient. Now, I enjoy designing in this way and do so whenever possible. I believe my meticulous nature makes this approach particularly appealing because it allows me to focus on broad strokes rather than minute details. As a concept artist, it’s crucial to be able to fully develop a concept, but if you can’t sketch, your work lacks substance.
This is our most comprehensive view yet, beyond a single piece of official concept art by artist Ryan Lang, showing Thanos alongside what appear to be his Titan ancestors.
Showing concept art of Thanos’ ancestors offered long-time Marvel Cinematic Universe fans a glimpse into the Mad Titan’s past prior to his power ascension in Avengers: Infinity War. This served as a reminder that an advanced civilization like Titan flourished before it was ultimately overwhelmed by overpopulation.
Initially, Thanos entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the conclusion of 2012’s “The Avengers.” It was then revealed that he orchestrated the Chitauri Invasion in New York. Later, a brief glimpse of him occurred in 2014’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” but it was in “Avengers: Infinity War” where Thanos embarked on his mission to collect the Infinity Stones with the intention of rebalancing the universe. Ultimately, he was overpowered by the united forces of Earth’s strongest superheroes in “Avengers: Endgame.
Will Thanos Ever Return in the MCU?
Despite Thanos appearing in various forms as Variants within Marvel’s animated series “What If…?”, his live-action reappearance remains absent, causing speculation among fans as to whether the Mad Titan has permanently vanished from the live-action scene.
Indeed, the appearance of Thanos’ brother, Starfox (played by Harry Styles), in the post-credits scene of “Eternals” suggests that more stories are yet to be explored regarding Josh Brolin’s character.
Previously in an interview with Collider, actor Josh Brolin mentioned that reintroducing Thanos should be “just right,” suggesting that a well-crafted and suitable narrative is essential for the Mad Titan’s comeback.
I’m not joking – there seems to be a plan for reintroducing Thanos, similar to how they handled Sicario, where precision and authenticity are key. Just like Ryan Reynolds and I discussing Taylor Swift, our conversation often drifts towards Deadpool 4 instead. However, we keep going back and forth. Ultimately, it’s about what works in the Russos’ minds and what fits for me. If Thanos is to return, he needs to fit seamlessly into the storyline. I would be willing to do whatever the Russos ask of me.
A likely scenario for Thanos’ reappearance could be through a narrative set in the past, enriching Thanos’ character background and the history of Titan. This might occur in a potential follow-up to the movie “Eternals“. By adopting this approach, Marvel could delve into the relationship between Starfox and Thanos, addressing numerous queries about his past and depicting Titan’s decline from the brothers’ point of view.
