As a diehard fan of both Marvel comics and Magic: The Gathering, I’m thrilled about the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man set this year! This exciting collaboration is part of Wizards of the Coast’s Universes Beyond collection, and it brings characters from Marvel’s Spider-Man into the realm of MTG. This is the first in a series of planned Marvel-themed cards, and it’s set to hit stores on September 26th. Today, we got a sneak peek at some of the cards included in the Magic: The Gathering Marvel’s Spider-Man set, along with preorder details and special bonuses.
In this Magic: The Gathering expansion titled Marvel’s Spider-Man, you’ll find artwork inspired by the iconic Spider-Man characters as seen in Marvel comics. Today, we got a sneak peek at several cards, such as Venom, Green Goblin, and Doc Ock. These characters are well-known to fans who have followed Spider-Man in the comic books or through Tobey Maguire’s portrayal. We also get a glimpse of Green Goblin’s Pumpkin Bombs, Doc Ock’s Grasping Tentacles, and, as expected, our very own Sensational Spider-man.
Each card shown in the preview is a borderless, full-art portrayal of iconic comic book characters and their associated items. In this set, Spiderman and his adversaries are categorized as Legendary Creatures, Pumpkin Bombs as Artifacts, and Ock’s tentacles as Sorcery cards. It appears that the usual “Universes Beyond” frame is absent from these card previews. As per Wizards’ announcement regarding pre-orders for the MTG Spider-Man collection, they are now aligning all MTG frames to match the standard Magic: The Gathering style. Further details about this alteration and the cards in the Marvel’s Spider-Man set will be revealed over the next few months prior to the official launch.
MTG x Spider-Man Card Legality & Preorder Bonus Details
If you’re curious about how the latest Marvel Spider-Man Magic: The Gathering (MTG) products fit into your gameplay, let me clarify their legal status:
Here’s a simplified explanation of the legality for the Marvel Spider-Man MTG products.
- Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man (SPM) is a Standard-legal set.
- Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man Eternal-Legal (SPE and MAR) are Commander-, Legacy-, and Vintage-legal sets, and individual cards are also legal where already available in other formats.
- Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man Play Boosters contain cards from SPM and MAR. These cards are playable in Magic: The Gathering | Marvel’s Spider-Man Draft and Sealed when opened from Play Boosters.
This collection features a Play Booster Box, Collection Boosters, Bundles, a “Spidey’s Spectacular Showdown” Scene Box, five Welcome Decks, and a Prerelease Pack. Unlike the previous Final Fantasy collaboration, this set does not seem to contain any Commander Decks. From today, enthusiasts can preorder the “MTG x Spider-Man” cards from Amazon or their local game store. Preorders made at your neighborhood game store will come with a unique Buy-a-Box promo card, details of which will be disclosed later on. The “Marvel’s Spider-Man” set is scheduled for release on September 26th.
