However, the absence of an English language track from the initial listing has sparked worries among fans, as they suspect it may be a mistake during the early stages of production. Over the years, multiple dubbed versions of the 80s “Urusei Yatsura” have emerged, including an AnimEigo-produced dub in 1995, an Animax dub during the 2000s, and more recent dubs for the films released in that era. These new adaptations usually feature different voice actors and production teams.
Among the most controversially humored redubs is the BBC Choice version from 2000. CBR explains that this BBC redub was a satirical take on a few episodes of the ’80s series, incorporating British cultural references and jokes absent in the original script. The reception for this dubbing wasn’t favorable, and it had never been distributed on home video. Interestingly, when Discotek released Blu-rays for the ’80s Urusei Yatsura anime, none of the discs included any English redubs. However, reissues of the Urusei Yatsura films in Blu-ray format do feature English redubs.
Was the Urusei Yatsura Listing a Mistake?
It’s often argued by subtitle-only viewers that English dubs are unnecessary for anime. However, I’d like to point out that English dubs play a crucial role in making these series accessible to a wider audience. This is especially important for people who find it challenging to read or comprehend other languages. In fact, many prefer watching a series in their native tongue. Consequently, if an anime isn’t dubbed into English, its viewership significantly decreases. This is why simultaneous dubbing is significant within the anime industry and why numerous companies put substantial effort into releasing their anime in English for American audiences.
Unofficial product listings can sometimes contain incorrect information due to outdated data. However, it’s beneficial that the company provides a platform where consumers can engage and possibly pre-order the item. Regrettably, despite being an integral part of anime history, Urusei Yatsura 2022 might not have lived up to Sentai Filmworks’ expectations as a major anime blockbuster. Due to the substantial investment in dubbing production, there’s a strong likelihood that the company couldn’t afford to create a new English dub for the release.
