What you need to know

  • Deadpool and Wolverine fever has, not surprisingly, pushed up used prices for the old Deadpool game on all platforms.
  • Previously available on Xbox 360 and Xbox One, the BBC is reporting one copy sold for an absurd £300 😲.
  • The Activision made game would technically be under Microsoft control now, but the license to sell it on the digital store has long since expired.

As a tech enthusiast with a soft spot for gaming and a deep affection for the mercenary with a mouth, I must confess that the recent surge in prices for the old Deadpool game has left me feeling more than just a tad frustrated. You see, last week, I wrote an article highlighting this obscure gem hidden among the gaming shelves, not realizing that the Deadpool and Wolverine fever was about to sweep the world like a wildfire.

Recently, under the influence of both Deadpool and Wolverine mania, I composed an article last week that brought to light an older Deadpool game for Xbox that may have slipped your notice. Initially, the resale value was quite steep, but since then, prices have dropped significantly.

A very bad turn.

According to reports from the BBC, prices have dramatically increased ever since the movie was released in theaters, reaching an astonishing £300 for a single, unopened copy on eBay. Yes, you read it correctly.

Enthusiasts have shelled out up to £116 on eBay for a chance to own the 2015 game Deadpool, while an impeccable, factory-sealed version went for as high as £330 just last week.

As a researcher exploring gaming experiences, I’ve come across a title that can no longer be digitally acquired. This implies that enthusiasts who wish to engage with this game should look for the physical editions instead.

Indeed, it appears to be a PS4 version of Deadpool you’re referring to, and I must admit, such an investment seems rather extraordinary. To those who appreciate collectibles, spending such a sum on a game might not appear excessive, but as the excitement fades, it’s likely that prices will eventually decrease.

It’s possible they own a pristine edition of Deadpool, but chances are its worth won’t increase much further, which is unfortunate since I have a damaged case and a misplaced DVD. This has just added to my disappointment.

Microsoft now owns the maker of the Deadpool game, but you can’t buy it anymore on the Store

Deadpool was initially developed by Activision, not linked to any movie adaptation. The game came out before the Fox-produced first Deadpool film by three years, which could be a reason why it wasn’t as widely recognized. To be honest, comic book enthusiasts are passionate, but it was Ryan Reynolds who really brought the character into mainstream popularity.

The issue at hand is that the game can no longer be purchased from any digital platform for purchase. Although Microsoft currently owns Activision, the license for this specific game has expired, leaving only second-hand copies as an option. However, I advise against purchasing from eBay. If you come across a copy being sold somewhere at a reasonable price, don’t hesitate to grab it immediately.

It’s clear that I’m not well-versed in licenses or their associated costs. However, the Fallout TV show demonstrated that such matters are often interconnected with people’s desire to play related games. It seems to me that Microsoft might have overlooked another opportunity. With Deadpool and Wolverine being the most anticipated film of 2024, it wouldn’t have been out of line for them to revisit Marvel and propose a brief license renewal to make the game available again for purchase.

When it comes to game preservation, the biggest obstacle we face is often licensing issues. Navigating through the processes and legalities can be challenging, but it’s common sense that this needs to be addressed.
