Actress Valerie Mahaffey, renowned for her Emmy-winning role in ‘Northern Exposure‘, has sadly passed away at the age of 71.
According to her husband, Joseph Kell, it was confirmed that Mahaffey passed away on May 30th. She had been battling cancer before her death. Kell expressed his feelings about her passing, saying “I’ve lost the love of my life, and America has lost one of its most beloved actresses. She will be greatly missed.
Mahaffey hails originally from Indonesia, but her mother was Canadian and her father American. She lived in Nigeria and England before finding her permanent home in Austin, Texas, where she completed her education. Inspired by the performing arts, she made her acting debut on Broadway in New York City during the late 1970s. During this period, she also secured a role on the daytime NBC soap The Doctors, playing Ashley Bennett from 1979 to 1980. This role netted her a Daytime Emmy nomination and paved the way for numerous other opportunities in acting.
Among Mahaffey’s most recognized characters is Eve, the habitual worrier about health, from the CBS series “Northern Exposure.” For this part, she was awarded an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in 1992. Later on, her performance as Alma Hodge left a lasting impression on viewers of “Desperate Housewives.” Fans of “Young Sheldon” might recognize her from her portrayal of Ms. MacElroy between 2017 and 2020. Additionally, she appeared in a recurring role in Netflix’s “Dead to Me,” followed by starring in the first season of ABC’s “Big Sky.”
In addition to her significant film roles, Mahaffey is recognized for portraying Miss Tracy Milford in the 1996 comedy “Senior Trip”. She also starred in films such as “Seabiscuit” alongside Tobey Maguire, “My First Wedding” with Rachel Leigh Cook, “Jungle 2 Jungle” featuring Tim Allen, and “A Previous Engagement” with Daniel Stern. Her extensive television appearances include “Quantum Leap”, “Cheers”, “Seinfeld”, “The Powers That Be”, “Wings”, “ER”, “Ally McBeal”, “The West Wing”, “Frasier”, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”, “CSI”, “Boston Legal”, “United Staates of Tara”, “Hannah Montana”, “Raising Hope”, “Grey’s Anatomy”, “The Man in the High Castle”, “The Mindy Project”, “Workaholics”, and “Glee”.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but share my excitement about one of Mahaffey’s recent performances. In the critically acclaimed 2020 movie “French Exit,” she brought Madame Reynaud to life, sharing screen time with the talented Michelle Pfeiffer and Lucas Hedges. Her exceptional performance earned her a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award in the Best Supporting Female category. Most recently, I’ve seen her in the film “The 8th Day.
Mahaffey expressed her delight over her work, noting that it was filled with numerous unforgettable and distinct characters, as she reminisced in an interview.
Mahaffey is survived by her husband, Kell, along with their daughter, Alice Richards.
