As things heat up in the realm of PC gaming, Valve isn’t necessarily out to convert users.
According to Pierre-Loup Griffais, one of the developers at Valve working on SteamOS, they are focusing on creating an outstanding experience for both players and developers. In an interview with French publication Frandroid (thanks to PC Gamer), Griffais clarified that their aim is not to monopolize a specific portion of the market from Microsoft and Windows.
Griffais states that the aim isn’t to achieve a specific market share or to drive users away from Windows. If a user enjoys using Windows, that’s fine. He finds it intriguing to create a system with unique objectives and priorities. If this system turns out to be a good option for regular desktop users as an alternative, that’s wonderful. It offers them choice. However, the goal isn’t just to convert users who already have a positive experience with their current system.
Valve achieved success in the portable gaming market with the Steam Deck, debuting in 2022. At CES 2025, it was announced that Valve would extend SteamOS support to devices beyond the Steam Deck, starting with a version of the Lenovo Legion Go S set for release later this year. This device generated quite an impression, making it one of the most intriguing tech items at the entire event, as noted by my coworker Zachary Boddy.
Griffin further mentions that the development crews aren’t strictly adhering to a set timetable for particular SteamOS enhancements and updates; rather, they’re consistently working on necessary tasks in any available time and location.
He clarifies that once our hardware was finished, it allowed SteamOS to expand and accommodate other handheld gaming consoles. Gradually, it will grow as substantial work is being done in tandem for enhancing its office applications. However, we don’t adhere to a strict timeline; instead, everything progresses incrementally.
An exciting space for competition
As SteamOS expands to various new devices imminently, I’m eager to learn about Microsoft’s upcoming strategies. In his CES 2025 address, the executive in charge of next-gen Xbox, Jason Ronald, hinted that there would be updates later in the year to bridge Windows and Xbox more closely. Additionally, it seems Microsoft is developing a dedicated Xbox handheld device, although it’s not expected to be unveiled anytime soon.
I fully support increased competition within this sector, since it allows companies like Microsoft and Valve to continuously innovate. This not only brings advantages for gamers and developers, but it also sets the stage for exciting developments. Additionally, this dynamic arises as Nintendo prepares to reveal a new version of its popular Nintendo Switch console.
This gadget is expected to adopt an entirely distinct strategy contrasting with devices such as the Steam Deck or ASUS ROG Ally. However, much like its predecessor, it will serve as a significant catalyst in the handheld sector and will undeniably be the most user-friendly device for the general public to purchase.
