Although AMD has introduced several new processors, including some designed for portable gaming PCs similar to the Steam Deck, Pierre-Loup Griffais from Valve has shared on social media platform BlueSky that the company is not currently developing a new version of the device which will utilize AMD’s Ryzen Z2 chips.
Griffais stated on BlueSky that there won’t be any Z2 Steam Deck, clarifying this wasn’t an announcement about a new product, but rather indicating that the series is suitable for devices similar to it.
Griffin is addressing speculations, which seem to have been sparked following AMD’s Ryzen Z2 announcements at CES. At this event, they highlighted devices such as the Steam Deck and Asus ROG Ally as potential applications for the chip. It’s important to mention that the Ryzen Z2 chip is superior in terms of power compared to the hardware used in the Steam Deck, mainly due to its advanced architecture that provides not only greater power but also enhanced efficiency for improved battery life.
Valve has maintained a consistent stance on not developing a new version of the Steam Deck; the latest model boasts a bigger battery and OLED screen as its main upgrades. Valve has previously indicated that they won’t launch a new Steam Deck unless there’s a significant advancement in power and efficiency, which the upcoming AMD chip would not provide as it’s considered an incremental upgrade. Instead, Valve has chosen to enhance the Steam Deck by introducing new software features through updates.
The popularity of the Steam Deck has encouraged game creators to take notice of this device, and it’s now frequent to hear about major games planning to be compatible with the Steam Deck at launch. The latest announcement came from BioWare in anticipation for their upcoming release, Dragon Age: Veilguard.
Other hardware manufacturers are observing the achievement of the Steam Deck and responding by introducing their own Windows-powered competitors into the market, such as the Asus ROG Ally and the Lenovo Legion Go.
Lately, Lenovo has partnered with Valve to develop a handheld gaming system apart from the Steam Deck, running on SteamOS as its operating system. This device is set for release later this year, and further enhancements will be made available via software updates, as Lenovo continues collaborating with Valve.
As an ardent fan, I must clarify that while the Z2 Steam Deck isn’t forthcoming, it appears that the series is geared towards creating devices similar to it. The presentation seems to be highlighting the type of products we can expect, rather than making a specific announcement about the Z2 Steam Deck itself.
