As a seasoned gamer with decades worth of gaming history under my belt, I can say that Valve’s approach to the Steam Deck is refreshing and much-needed in today’s fast-paced tech world. Having seen countless devices come and go, often with only minor upgrades each year, it’s heartening to see a company prioritizing substance over speed.
Valve’s Steam Deck has been incredibly popular, and they’ve hinted multiple times in the past about creating further versions of their portable gaming device. While it’s likely we’ll eventually get a Steam Deck 2, it doesn’t appear that release is imminent.
During a recent conversation with Reviews.org, Valve designer Lawrence Yang clarified that the company has no plans to launch new versions of the Steam Deck every year. He further added that the likelihood of a Steam Deck 2 is slim unless there’s a compelling reason for its existence and it represents a significant “generational leap”.
Yang made it clear that they will not adhere to an annual update schedule, as there’s no need for such frequent updates. Instead, they aim to wait for a significant leap in computing power without compromising battery life before releasing the second generation of Steam Deck. This is something they are eagerly working on and looking forward to.
On prior occasions, Valve has made remarks of a similar nature. Last year, designer Jay Shaw mentioned that the company was constantly pondering over the idea of Steam Deck 2. However, he also emphasized that they would wait for technology to develop in a manner that catches their interest and motivates the team to take the plunge.
Previously, Pierre-Lou Griffais from Valve had hinted that a potential release date for Steam Deck 2 might be at least two years away.
