Over the years, many characters descended from Dracula have appeared in popular culture. One such character is Alucard from Castlevania, who is set to return on Netflix within a week. However, another vampire named D, widely known for his role as a vampire hunter in the anime world, has been eagerly awaited by fans for quite some time now. Unfortunately, there have been no new anime projects featuring D. But fear not! The Vampire Hunter D franchise is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2025 and has something special planned as a surprise for its loyal fans who have waited so long to see their beloved character return to the screen.
For those not familiar, “Vampire Hunter D” initially gained popularity through novels written by Hideyuki Kikuchi and illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano. Set in a dystopian future, this series follows the son of Dracula as he battles the undead, grappling with his heritage in various situations. What sets “D” apart from other vampire hunters is his unique companion – a hand-like being on his left hand, which often provides aid during critical moments while offering witty, yet irritating, observations about the perils that D encounters.

Vampire Hunter D Turns 40
In celebration of forty years of nightly beast-hunting, Japan has unveiled the first installment of the manga, “Vampire Hunter D – Rose Princess“. This manga is based on the ninth novel in the series, where D confronts a lethal vampire princess and her governed village. Currently scheduled for a bi-weekly release in Japan, it remains undecided if this new manga will be distributed globally. For more details about “Rose Princess“, here’s an official summary of the latest manga adventure starring D:
In the village of Sakuri, a young woman stands on the brink of being sacrificed to a powerful vampire who rules over the town. Just as the vampire princess is about to drain the woman’s life, a brave young man steps in to slay her. However, he fails and flees, enraging the entire village. The citizens have made a pact with the vampire princess and her monstrous guards, and now these guards are sworn to kill the villagers one by one until they capture the would-be hero. When Vampire Hunter D learns of the villagers’ deal with the undead, he knows he must overcome several nearly insurmountable challenges: can he rid Sakuri of the demonic vampires that torment it? But what if the villagers don’t want to be saved? And could he uncover the secret that even the vampire princess fears to reveal?
Will We Ever Get a New Anime?
The Vampire Hunter D franchise has been disappointing because it hasn’t been adapted into a television series yet. The 1985 movie and the 2000 sequel, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, are still considered the best “vampire anime” to this day. Recently, Studio Madhouse, known for productions like One-Punch Man, Trigun, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, animated the latest film. Here’s hoping that one studio will breathe new life into the character of Dracula’s son.
