Venom: The Last Dance Crosses Major Box Office Milestone, But It’s Still the Lowest-Grossing Venom Movie

Venom: The Last Dance Crosses Major Box Office Milestone, But It’s Still the Lowest-Grossing Venom Movie

As a movie buff with a penchant for superhero films and a keen eye for box office trends, it’s clear that Sony’s Venom trilogy has been a rollercoaster ride, much like the symbiotic relationship between Eddie Brock and Venom itself. The third installment, Venom: The Last Dance, is currently dominating the box office, but it’s interesting to note that it’s not quite keeping pace with its predecessors in terms of domestic earnings.

In the last three weeks, “Venom: The Last Dance” has been dancing its way to the top spot at the box office. This third and final movie in Sony’s Tom Hardy-led “Venom” series collected an extra $16.2 million over the weekend, outperforming new arrivals “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” ($11.1 million) and “Heretic” ($11 million). Domestically, “Venom 3” has surpassed the $100 million mark with a total of $114.8 million, increasing its overall global earnings to $394 million.

Although the Sony-Marvel film is on track to surpass $400 million globally, it’s currently underperforming compared to its previous installments: Venom (2018) and Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021). After opening with a record-breaking $80 million in October (a record later broken by 2019’s Joker), the original Venom had earned $171 million domestically at this same stage, five years ago. At that time, its North American run concluded at $213.5 million.

In the midst of the pandemic in 2021, the sequel to “Venom 2” earned approximately $168 million by its third week, slightly falling short of its predecessor’s domestic total of $213.4 million after 17 weeks. Both movies were moderately priced compared to usual superhero films, with budgets of $100 million and $110 million respectively, while “Venom 3” is said to have cost around $120 million to produce.

Title “Red One” is poised to outshine Venom 3 and claim the top spot upon its release on Nov. 15, with an estimated opening weekend earnings of $20 million to $40 million. Other releases this month include Gladiator II and Wicked, both set to clash during the Nov. 22 weekend. Meanwhile, Disney’s animated sequel Moana 2 is expected to make a splash in theaters over Thanksgiving, with projected earnings of $125 million to $135 million for its five-day debut.

In October, the third installment of the Venom series earned a franchise-low of $51 million, which was less than Johnson’s DC film Black Adam that debuted during the same weekend in 2022. Interestingly, both movies had comparable Rotten Tomatoes ratings (39% for Venom 3 and 41% for Black Adam), but the latter went on to amass a total of $390 million worldwide.

In comparison to other movies in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, the rating for Venom 3 on Rotten Tomatoes was relatively high – superior to Venom (30%), Morbius (15%), and Madame Web (11%). It fell short of only Venom 2 (57%). However, this suggests a trend of decreasing returns for the Spider-Man Universe. Upcoming in December is Kraven the Hunter, an R-rated movie featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the Spider-Man villain. Interestingly, it will be released one week prior to both Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa: The Lion King, which will compete against each other during Christmas on December 20th.
