As a movie enthusiast who has been following the Venom franchise since its inception, I must say I am a bit disappointed with the lackluster box office performance of Venom: The Last Dance. Having watched and reviewed countless films over the years, I’ve come to appreciate the thrill of anticipation that builds up around the release of a highly-anticipated film. However, it seems that this time around, the excitement didn’t quite translate into box office success.

In cinemas now, “Venom: The Last Dance,” the concluding chapter of the trilogy, has been released with high anticipation. However, reviews for the movie have been a mix of positive and negative, and unfortunately, the latest box office figures aren’t encouraging either. According to Variety, on its first day in theaters, including previews, “The Last Dance” earned $22 million from 4,131 locations within the U.S., which is significantly less than the opening-day takings of the previous installments. This suggests that it may fall short of initial weekend earnings projections.

As a supporter, I initially anticipated that The Last Dance would rake in approximately $65 million over the weekend. However, if the current downward trend persists, it might not reach that figure. To put things into perspective, the original Venom movie from 2018 garnered $32 million on its opening day, while Let There Be Carnage, released in 2021, brought in the most for the trilogy with a staggering $37 million.

In a similar vein, the initial Venom movie made more than $80 million during its opening weekend and amassed a grand total of over $856 million at the global box office after concluding its cinema release. Conversely, Let There Be Carnage surpassed the original’s opening weekend earnings, grossing over $90 million. However, it fell short of the previous movie’s overall box office success, ending with a worldwide total of over $506 million.

In terms of The Last Dance’s future, if it doesn’t manage to stretch its legs in cinemas, it could potentially rank lower than both the original film and its sequel in opening weekend earnings as well as overall box office revenue. However, if international viewers show up strongly like they did for the previous films, it might surpass Let There Be Carnage. But it needs to maintain a significant level of interest throughout its run, which could be challenging given the numerous new movies being released.

As a movie enthusiast, I must admit that while The Last Dance didn’t break any box office records, it’s still making waves as the biggest domestic opening since Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Plus, with a more modest blockbuster budget of $120 million, it’s proving to be an economically savvy choice. Currently, it holds a B- Cinemascore, which isn’t too shabby, though it’s slightly lower than the first two films’ B+ scores.

In its second week, Smile 2 slides into second position, overtaking Venom: The Last Dance. If projections are accurate, Smile 2 is expected to generate approximately $10.3 million, representing a 55% decrease from its opening earnings last week. This could potentially push its total earnings past the $40 million mark by the end of the weekend. Conclave debuted in third place, earning $2.5 million from 1,753 cinemas on its opening day and receiving a B+ CinemaScore.

Additionally, there’s been a lot of buzz about the upcoming movie, Terrifier 3. It has already earned $4.5 million in its third weekend. If predictions are correct, it is expected to reach around $44 million by the end of the weekend. This would be three times the combined total earnings of both Terrifier and Terrifier 2, which is quite impressive.
