Vera star Brenda Blethyn reveals finale scene that broke her heart

As a cinema devotee who has witnessed numerous farewells of beloved characters and series over the years, I must admit, the impending end of Vera leaves me with a tinge of melancholy. The long-running ITV drama has been a staple for many viewers like myself, providing us with gripping mysteries and the indomitable spirit of Detective Vera Stanhope, brilliantly portrayed by Brenda Blethyn.

In a few days, we’ll have to say goodbye to Vera permanently, as the popular ITV series is set to wrap up in the upcoming year.

In addition, with the end of the crime drama, viewers are bound to look forward to seeing less of Brenda Blethyn, who plays the lead detective, on their screens.

Apart from the last episodes promising an intriguing exploration deep into Vera’s mind, Blethyn hinted that several scenes in the final episode were particularly moving to shoot.

In a statement, Blethyn shared: “There was one particular scene featuring Vera and DC Kenny Lockhart, portrayed by Jon Morrison. Reading the script for this scene was heart-wrenching, and filming it was quite an emotional experience.

After the conclusion of events, Jon Morrison called me and expressed his gratitude for the 14 years of collaboration. Such a polite man. However, I reciprocated his thanks and made it clear that I wouldn’t continue with any episodes without him, which is indeed the case.

The last two episodes of the series will be broadcast on January 1st and 2nd, 2025. However, being the final episodes doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll lack excitement or drama.

Vera’s fourteenth season will debut on Wednesday, January 1st at 8 PM on ITV1. If you haven’t seen the earlier episodes, they can be found on ITVX.
