Video Game Actor Strike Over AI Concerns Could Finally Be Close to an End

This past summer, the American actors’ union SAG-AFTRA started a work stoppage over the employment of AI for voiceovers in video games. Currently, it appears that this strike could be coming to an end, approximately one year later.

The labor organization declared they’ve struck a preliminary deal with publishers and creators such as Activision, Warner Bros. Games, Electronic Arts, Insomniac Games, and numerous others.

According to SAG-AFTRA’s announcement, the strike is anticipated to be called off when both parties reach an agreement on the conditions for suspending the strike with the employers.

The deal needs approval following a review, so there are some final tasks left, but it’s a significant advancement towards our goal.

According to the National Executive Director and Lead Negotiator, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, “Patience and determination have led to an agreement that establishes vital safeguards for A.I., ensuring the security of performers’ livelihoods in this technological era, along with other significant advancements.

Participating performers will remain on strike until the ink has dried on a final agreement.

According to SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher, our video game actors held their ground against some of the largest companies in one of the wealthiest industries globally. “Their remarkable bravery and determination, coupled with the unwavering efforts of our negotiating team, have finally resulted in a deal,” she said. “We’ve made progress and our situation is significantly improved. Once this agreement is approved, we’re ready to start strategizing for the next round of negotiations. Every contract is a continuous process, and advancement is what we strive for.
