As a seasoned traveler who’s been to my fair share of royal courts and bustling metropolises, I must say that Vienna has truly taken the cake (or perhaps the Sacher-Torte) as one of the most captivating cities I’ve ever had the pleasure to explore.
Initially serving as a hub for both cultural and political influence in Europe, Vienna has consistently upheld its image as an elegant, traditional city, characterized by neoclassical or baroque architecture, rich cuisine, and an air of old-world sophistication evident on every golden corner. My primary purpose for visiting is to immerse myself in the Vienna that once belonged to Empress Sisi – a figure reminiscent of Princess Diana, who was the Austrian Queen of Hearts within the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and whose life story has been brought back to screens by Netflix’s hit drama ‘The Empress‘, now in its second season.

Lucky for you, among the schnitzels, strudels, concertos, spins, and wieners, there’s a vibrant, modern, refined metropolis waiting for you. This urban elegance is beautifully encapsulated in my lodging, Hotel Amauris (theamauris.com). Across from the State Opera – designed in a neoclassical rather than baroque fashion – it features the progressive Restaurant Glasswing, which sources ingredients locally. The hotel’s design blends elements of its opulent history with contemporary style.
Another excellent example of the modern lying just beneath the surface is Pramerl and the Wolf. Appearing as a traditional Viennese gasthaus (pub) from the outside, the façade belies a contemporary, small-cover Michelin-star restaurant, with imaginative twists on classics, sensational flavours and equally impressive wine pairings. If you’re of a more literal mind, then just below the city surface is the Krypt Bar (krypt.bar), where a narrow stairway opens out onto a vaulted cellar – allegedly with a history as a “semi-legal” jazz club (semi-legal jazz being my favourite genre) – that now houses a stylish-but-lively bar.
The Empress effectively highlights the significant influence the Austro-Hungarian Empire held before World War I, and a leisurely walk through Prater Park, formerly a royal hunting ground, conveys a comparable narrative. It was transformed into a public space in 1766, featuring one of the oldest amusement parks globally, including its iconic Ferris wheel.
Instead of the manicured, old-world charm of Europe, you’ll find yourself transitioning into Campus WU, not just a segment of Vienna University but an extension of the city’s public spaces designed for the 21st century. It’s a favorite spot for tourists and has also earned recognition from international architecture competition juries due to its unique, inspiring modern designs and eco-friendly features – making it a perfect place for a leisurely stroll on a sunny Sunday morning.

This perspective encapsulates the Viennese spirit: it’s beautifully blended with a mix of the past and present, and it warmly welcomes its residents. Indeed, it’s a city fit for kings and queens, but its openness and contemporary vibe ensures that everyone is invited to dance at the ball.
