The third season of “Vikings: Valhalla” concluded, masterfully setting up its highly anticipated spinoff. However, what followed was a squandering of this potential. The acclaimed historical drama “Vikings,” created by Michael Hirst, spawned a sequel series titled “Vikings: Valhalla” two years after its finale. Set over a century beyond the events of “Vikings” season 6, the show introduces new characters, although some of them are descendants of notable characters from the original series (such as Emma of Normandy and Rollo).
The television series titled “Vikings: Valhalla” started when the strife between the Vikings and the English escalated to an all-time high following the St. Brice’s Day massacre. This conflict wasn’t just about territorial disputes, but also clashed the beliefs of pagan Vikings with those who had adopted Christianity. Central figures in “Vikings: Valhalla” were Leif Erikson (Sam Corlett) and Freydis Eiríksdóttir (Frida Gustavsson), both pagan siblings, as well as Norwegian prince Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter). Regrettably, despite having plenty more tales to share, “Vikings: Valhalla” came to an end after only three seasons, leaving a promising setup for a sequel series largely untapped.
Vikings: Valhalla Ended With Leif Finally Sailing To America
Leif Erikson Found His Calling At The End Of Vikings: Valhalla
Leif Erikson, a significant figure among Vikings, was born to Erik the Red, who established the first Norse settlement in Greenland. He had siblings named Freydis, Thorvald, and Thorstein. It’s believed that Leif Erikson might have been the very first European to step on continental America, well before Christopher Columbus made his voyage – although the exact details of his journey to Vinland can vary depending on the account. Unlike the portrayal of Erikson in the series ‘Vikings: Valhalla’, the real Leif Erikson embraced Christianity while serving King Olaf I Tryggvason.
I became quite thrilled when Leif Erikson was revealed as a key character in “Vikings: Valhalla.” This excitement grew even stronger upon learning about a significant historical alteration in the original series (I’ll delve into that later). Nevertheless, “Vikings: Valhalla” postponed exploring Leif’s expedition plans and preparations for his voyage to the Land of Gold until its third and final season. This timing proved ideal for setting up a spinoff.
In the third season of “Vikings: Valhalla,” Leif embarked on a quest to discover the mythical Golden Land, having caught a glimpse of it during his travels with his father. Freydis, believing this land would provide a sanctuary and prosperity for their people, chose to accompany him. However, as the third season concluded, Leif, Freydis, and their companions set sail, leaving their journey unexplored.
Vikings Made A Huge Change To Leif’s Journey To America
Leif’s Journey Left A Huge Mystery Thanks To Vikings
To clarify, while Leif Erikson is generally recognized as the first European to set foot on American soil, this fact seems to be overlooked by the characters in the show Vikings. In the series, Ragnar Lothbrok (played by Travis Fimmel) yearned to explore lands beyond his own but didn’t get the chance. Instead, Ragnar’s friend and boat builder Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård), who hails from Vikings, embarked on this journey. Towards the end of season 5, it was assumed that Floki perished in a cave near an active volcano, but surprisingly, he was found to be alive when season 6 began.
If I were a movie lover, I’d rephrase it like this: In an unexpected turn of events, I found myself in America – or so it seemed to me, a man of the North. There, I carved out a settlement, a beacon for my kind. Later on, I was reunited with Ragnar’s son, Ubbe, who discovered me among these new lands. The saga of the Vikings concluded with us, Ubbe and I, seated on an American beach, sharing tales of our journeys. Interestingly, the series ‘Vikings: Valhalla’ skipped over Leif’s voyage, thus avoiding delving into this historical shift. Yet, it would have been captivating to follow the story of Floki, Ubbe, and their settlement, as well as how Leif and Freydis would have thrived in the land they called the Golden Land.
Will Vikings: Valhalla Season 4 Ever Happen?
The Future Of Vikings: Valhalla Isn’t Bright
It appears that the storylines in Vikings: Valhalla won’t continue any further as the show was intended to conclude after its third season. Though season 3 covered a lot of ground and paved the way for a fourth season and some spinoffs, creator Jeb Stuart explained that it felt appropriate for the series to finish at that point (as reported by Economic Times). The characters’ journeys of Leif, Freydis, and Harald have now come to an end, leaving many unresolved plotlines and missed opportunities for further development. It is now left to viewers to imagine how they believe these characters’ stories truly unfolded.
