As a seasoned movie-goer with a penchant for action-packed films and a soft spot for Christmas movies, I can’t help but feel a twinge of excitement at the prospect of David Harbour reprising his role as Santa Claus in a sequel to 2022’s Violent Night. The original film was a refreshing take on the classic tale, and Harbour’s performance as a weary, battle-hardened Kris Kringle was nothing short of brilliant.
In 2022, David Harbour, known for his role in Stranger Things, breathed life into one of the most memorable characters of all time in the action-packed Violent Night. This portrayal of Kris Kringle was more brutal and fast-paced than any previous screen adaptation. Director Tommy Wirkola announced in January 2023 that a sequel was in the works, although its development was postponed due to last year’s writers’ and actors’ strikes. Harbour remains optimistic about the project, stating it’s just a matter of aligning all the necessary components. Prior to this, Harbour will appear as Frankenstein in Creature Commandos, set to premiere on Max on December 5th.
Harbour shared with ComicBook that it’s not just him who wishes for a sequel to the movie, “I believe many fans feel the same way.” He added, “Stay tuned because I share your enthusiasm for this film and so does Universal. We’re putting some effort into it.
He added, “I do think there’s some very talented people working on it, so yeah, I’m excited about.”
In the initial movie, Santa Claus, portrayed by Harbour, was depicted as weakening with each passing year due to fewer children worldwide believing in him. During an incident at a grand mansion, he found himself entangled in a daring robbery orchestrated by ruthless criminals armed to the teeth. In order to save the family, Santa Claus had no choice but to use unexpected strategies against the intruders. The movie faithfully lived up to its title and offered a raw, intense R-rated portrayal, while also exploring various aspects of Christmas folklore.
Last year, Harbour confirmed that it was the strikes that had impeded development of the project.
In an interview with Collider, the actor mentioned that prior to the writers’ strike, there might have been a potential script or idea in the works. If they can resolve the ongoing labor disputes, it could pave the way for filming various projects he’s excited to share with audiences. However, he also indicated that they are currently navigating this situation.
An additional challenge is that Harbour is currently filming the last season of Stranger Things, a project that will undoubtedly consume his time in the near future. Nevertheless, until that’s done, fans can catch Harbour voicing another well-known character as Frankenstein in DC’s Creature Commandos.
Creature Commandos follows a clandestine squad of imprisoned monsters who take on missions that are too risky for humans. In desperate situations… they’re your least desirable yet necessary choice. The cast features Steve Agee as Economos, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Sean Gunn as GI Robot and Weasel, David Harbour as Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Indira Varma as The Bride, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.
Keep an eye out for news about “Violent Night 2”. Don’t forget to watch “Creature Commandos” when it debuts on Max, starting December 5th.
