Nintendo unveiled the Virtual Game Cards, a novel digital gaming management system designed for both Nintendo Switch and its upcoming model, Switch 2. This innovative approach aims to streamline digital game handling and offers users the opportunity to share games among family members linked under one Nintendo Account. The system will roll out on Nintendo Switch in late April as part of a software update, and it will be accessible at the launch of Switch 2.
Here are the details:
Virtual Game Cards Make Digital Games Even Easier to Use
On Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, the virtual game card function brings a degree of adaptability from traditional game cards into your digital collection, allowing you to manage your games more flexibly!
You can transfer or swap games between two systems digitally. Not only that, but you can also share games with other members who are part of your Nintendo Account family group.
—Open the HOME Menu and select Virtual Game Cards.
—”Take a look at your collection of digital video games. Please note that virtual game cards might not allow demos, and some games exclusive to Nintendo Switch Online members are not accessible in this manner.
—Select the game you want to load—and start playing as soon as the game data is downloaded!
Move Your Games Between Systems
As a devoted Nintendo enthusiast, I’ve found an exciting feature that allows for seamless switching between systems linked to my Nintendo Account. Just as if you were swapping out a physical game card, you can effortlessly transfer your games from one device to another. To do this, simply remove the virtual game card from one system and insert it into the other. It’s like having a magic game card that adapts to whichever console I fancy using!
Whenever I load a digital game card onto my gaming setup, I’m able to enjoy it offline, all by myself. However, the real fun kicks in when other accounts within my system join in and we can all play together, no internet required!
You can also manage and load virtual game cards via your Nintendo Account on the Nintendo website.
Lend Games to Members of Your Nintendo Account Family Group
Additionally, you have the option to share digital game cards from your Nintendo Account with your family group members. To do this, simply link your system to theirs through local wireless connection whenever you wish to loan a game. Keep in mind that both systems should be online as well for this process to work smoothly.
You can lend one game per account for 14 days (unless the borrower returns it earlier).
After returning the game, the player can continue from where they last played, as their save data remains intact. If they lend it again or buy it anew, they can pick up right away without losing progress.
To run the lending software, it’s essential to have both nearby wireless and internet connectivity. However, it is important to remember that specific games, like those exclusive to a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, are non-transferable.
This feature will be accessible on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and the Nintendo Switch – OLED Model starting from late April 2025. However, you’ll need to perform a system update for these Nintendo Switch systems before you can utilize it.
For using virtual game cards, it’s essential that compatible systems are connected to a Nintendo Account. Exclusive games for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch 2 Edition can exclusively run on a Nintendo Switch 2 system. To transfer virtual game cards between two systems, they must initially be paired via local wireless and an internet connection. However, this process can only occur when pairing the systems for the first time. A maximum of two systems can be linked per Nintendo Account.
As a gamer, I’ve found myself in a situation where I need an internet connection the very first time I boot up a game I’ve downloaded on my system. Similarly, every time I eject a previously played game, I’m back online again to ensure it continues running smoothly.
