Voltron Live-Action Movie Adds Sterling K. Brown and More (But Who Will They Play?)

As a long-time fan of Voltron, I can hardly contain my excitement about this upcoming live-action movie! Having grown up with the original animated series, I’ve seen countless reboots and adaptations come and go, but nothing quite compares to the thrill of seeing our beloved robot lion team come to life on the big screen.

The iconic series Voltron is preparing to make a comeback with a fresh live-action movie, and Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora, and others have been cast in enigmatic roles as part of this reboot. For quite some time now, the revival of Voltron has been simmering behind the scenes, but only recently has it gained momentum towards actual production. The greenlight for a live-action Voltron movie from Amazon MGM Studios was announced earlier this summer, and casting calls are expected to commence in the coming months. So far, we’ve caught glimpses of these developments.

Information about the upcoming live-action Voltron movie is still scarce, but Red Notice screenwriter and director Rawson Marshall Thurber is currently working on it. The initial cast members have been gradually assembled, featuring both lesser-known and unexpected big names. Recently, Deadline announced that Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora, and John Kim have joined the project in as-yet-unspecified roles.

What Will Voltron’s Live-Action Movie Reboot Look Like?

So far, we know that the live-action Voltron reboot is going to be directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber. Thurber and Ellen Shanman have collaborated on writing the script. Todd Lieberman, David Hoberman, and Bob Koplar will be producing the movie, with World Events Productions (the studio behind the original animated Voltron series) being represented by Koplar. The main character in the film is newcomer Daniel Quinn-Toye, who has been cast but his character’s name hasn’t been disclosed yet, making it unclear which era of Voltron the movie will be based on for inspiration.

Previously, it was announced that Henry Cavill, who has played both Superman and The Witcher, has agreed to star in the project, though his character remains unannounced at this point. As for Sterling K. Brown or Rita Ora, their roles alongside Cavill are yet to be disclosed. In this adaptation of Voltron, Quinn-Toye will lead the cast, and John Kim (recently seen in Prime Video’s Cruel Intentions series) is in a similar age range as the original pilots. This suggests that we might get a classic interpretation of Voltron with a fresh twist for contemporary audiences.

Will Live-Action Voltron Change Everything?

For quite some time, Thurber has been trying to sell a live-action version of Voltron. This project was eventually approved by Amazon MGM Studios. Given that Thurber appears to be a fan of the original anime series and its subsequent English adaptations, it’s not surprising that fans are familiar with Voltron reboots. However, due to concerns about how a Hollywood-produced live-action film might turn out, anime enthusiasts have expressed some apprehension about this project.

In a statement made to Voltron enthusiasts earlier this year, the screenwriter and director expressed his enthusiasm for the series, saying “I’m committed to preserving the essence and soul of Voltron in our film. We’re introducing a fresh team of pilots, but we’ll maintain the beloved features that you and I cherish. I can’t wait to unveil it to all of you.
