Waitrose finally unveils dessert thief in Christmas advert part 2

As a movie critic with a penchant for British whodunits and a soft spot for holiday-themed mysteries, I must say that Waitrose’s 2024 Christmas ad campaign has left me thoroughly entertained. Having spent countless hours poring over Agatha Christie novels and classic Brit flicks, the suspenseful buildup of this advert was reminiscent of a well-crafted episode of Midsomer Murders.

2024 saw Waitrose triumphantly captivate the nation with their witty, murder-mystery themed Christmas advertisement.

Participants were eagerly analyzing hints to determine who had swiped the delicious No. 1 Red Velvet Ornamental Dessert, as more than 18,000 Waitrose patrons cast their votes for their suspect of choice (Fig the Cat emerged as the top pick).

In the second part of the advertisement, it has been revealed that the holiday season’s mysterious culprit is Steve (played by Dustin Demri-Burns), a character whom less than 9 out of 10 people guessed correctly.

To begin, Matthew Macfadyen’s character in the advertisement is seen analyzing the actions of the dinner attendees, and then deducing that one person must have secretly hidden the dessert and created a diversion to sneak it off the premises.

Straight away, it became clear that Steve was the culprit; he’d been sneaking about while everyone else was preoccupied with thoughtful presents and accidental spills – he even managed to toss a ball for Fig to create an alibi.

In an ingenious move, Steve secretly placed the gingerbread house atop the cake, ensuring that only those observant enough would detect it during transportation.

Inside the shed, Steve hoisted the structure upward to uncover a scrumptious No. 1 Red Velvet Bauble Dessert.

As he took a bite, the door flew open as the family looked upon guilty Steve, who meekly offered them a bite.

Nathan Ansell, the Customer Director at Waitrose, mentioned: “Over the past few weeks, there’s been a lot of speculation, guesswork, and sharing of alibis. Customers and employees have joined in the fun of solving the mystery, as some wore promotional t-shirts in stores with their guesses about the perpetrator. We’ve also witnessed high levels of interaction on social media polls, and I’ve received personal messages from customers presenting their elaborate theories and related images.

I’m eagerly anticipating the revelation of who is responsible! Here’s to a delightful gathering, filled with fantastic FOOD, and sharing the joy of watching everyone’s expressions – whether it’s surprise or satisfaction.

“I’ve been wrongly blamed from all sides, so I’m relieved the public now understands that I wasn’t responsible for it.

Dustin Demri-Burns, portraying food enthusiast Steve, shared: “I completely understand Steve’s tendency to sneak desserts, for at Christmas time, the stress of making everything perfect can be overwhelming. It’s perfectly fine if we sometimes just want to enjoy our treat in solitude, like in a shed, and that’s acceptable.
