As a devoted follower of the unfolding events surrounding Gursimran Kaur’s tragic death, my heart is heavy with sympathy for her family and friends. I find myself drawn to this story not just because it happened in a familiar place like Walmart, but because it reminds me of my own immigrant journey from India years ago.
Nearly a fortnight has passed since 19-year-old Walmart worker Gursimran Kaur was discovered lifeless inside a walk-in oven at their Halifax branch. On November 3, a solemn candlelight vigil took place in the store’s car park to pay tribute to the deceased adolescent.
Astik Singh Chouhan shared with CTV News Atlantic that the graduate was consistently brimming with enthusiasm and had numerous plans for post-graduation. He added, “Thinking about her now… it’s still difficult for me to accept that she is gone.
Besides family and friends, mourners were also accompanied by some of Kaur’s coworkers, as reported by a representative from Walmart Canada to CTV News.
According to company representative Amanda Moss, our team members wished to gather tonight for mutual mourning and to express solidarity. The probe remains ongoing, as police have clarified, and it’s intricate. We are committed to assisting the authorities in every way possible during their investigation.
Moss went on to explain, “Our focus is on figuring out what led to this unfortunate incident. We’re standing by our team members, offering them our support as they navigate through these tough times.
On October 22, the Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration ordered a halt to work at the store’s bakery section. A representative from Walmart had earlier informed TopMob News that the store would stay closed indefinitely while local authorities continue investigating the incident that occurred on October 19.
Simultaneously, a GoFundMe campaign initiated by the Maritime Sikh Society amassed close to $200,000 for Kaur’s family. Her mother, who was reportedly working with Kaur at the Walmart store and discovered her daughter in the oven, is included in this support. NBC News mentioned that they had moved from India to Canada approximately two years back.
Initially, the suspended fundraising effort aimed to compensate for the travel expenses of Kaur’s father and brother, who were overseas during her passing, as reported by CBC News. Now, both individuals are said to be in Canada.
