At EPCOT’s The Seas With Nemo & Friends, two cherished inhabitants – Lil Joe and Inigo, the manatees – have recently been moved out. This has resulted in the manatee viewing area being temporarily closed off with ropes, making it unavailable for guests to visit at this time. This change reflects a shift from the initial aim of Disney’s pavilion, which was to educate and entertain through the integration of these marine creatures.
This adjustment, allegedly aligning with suggestions from the Manatee Rehabilitation Partnership and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services, represents yet another step that seems to undermine EPCOT’s role as a learning-oriented amusement park.
For quite some time, Lil Joe lived in The Seas, charming guests with his peaceful demeanor and initiating numerous discussions about marine preservation. Shortly following Lou’s relocation as part of a Florida-wide manatee care revamp in September, Inigo joined him. Now, both Lil Joe and Inigo are transferred to the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park and Mote Marine Laboratory for extended rehabilitation.
The team working at The Seas has mentioned a possible shift towards temporary rehabilitation, implying that new manatees might join in time, but this hasn’t been officially confirmed yet. For now, the manatee exhibit remains concealed behind blue drapes and barriers, with no definite plan for its reopening. The absence of these cherished animals is deeply missed by visitors who appreciated their unique and enlightening presence.
The focus here isn’t merely on the two manatees in EPCOT; it’s about the broader transformation of EPCOT as a whole. Originally conceived as a space for education and exploration, EPCOT is now evolving into an amusement park centered around intellectual properties (IP). The Seas, formerly known as The Living Seas, was an innovative exhibit that seamlessly integrated marine life with educational content. However, over time, much of this original vision has given way to characters from the movie “Finding Nemo,” which has significantly altered the pavilion’s purpose and meaning.
It’s not just about those two manatees in EPCOT; it’s about how EPCOT is changing from a place for learning and discovery into an entertainment park that uses popular stories as its main attraction. The Seas, originally designed to teach us about marine life while we enjoyed the view, now features characters from “Finding Nemo,” which has changed what it means to visit this pavilion.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice the transformation EPCOT is undergoing, which feels symbolic of its current identity struggle. Gone are the days of educational attractions like Ellen’s Energy Adventure and Maelstrom, replaced by exhilarating rides such as Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Frozen Ever After. Even the introduction of immersive experiences based on intellectual properties (IP), like Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana, seems to divert attention from EPCOT’s original mission of fostering curiosity and learning.
With ticket prices reaching unprecedented levels, visitors are starting to wonder if a trip to EPCOT is still financially sound. The manatee exhibit once provided an exceptional mix of education and amusement, reflecting Walt Disney’s original vision for the park. However, the closure of this area, along with the departure of EPCOT’s dolphins, construction within The Seas Pavilion, and the temporary halt of the DiveQuest scuba experience, has significantly diminished the variety of attractions available there.
Disney has promised visitors that their construction project will incorporate upgrades for accessibility, like widened paths suitable for scooters and wheelchairs, as well as more rigorous safety training for divers. Though these modifications are commendable, they don’t tackle the obvious gap in engaging, educational opportunities that used to characterize EPCOT.
The disappearance of manatees from The Seas Pavilion serves as yet another indication of how EPCOT has moved away from its original purpose. Originally, this park was designed to stimulate curiosity, enlighten visitors, and instill awe about the world. With each removal of an educational, cherished attraction, we lose a piece of that legacy, transforming the park into something resembling a typical IP-themed park rather than a place for exploration.
