WandaVision Showrunner Confirms Disney+ Series Scrapped an Episode

As a seasoned gamer and Marvel fanatic who has spent countless hours immersed in the intricate tapestry of the MCU, I must say that this news about WandaVision leaves me both intrigued and slightly disappointed. On one hand, it’s fascinating to learn that the showrunner had a ten-episode plan initially, suggesting a richer narrative that might have been. However, as a pragmatist who understands the realities of budgeting and production schedules, I can empathize with the decision to combine episodes for a more coherent viewing experience.

According to WandaVision showrunner Jac Schaeffer, an entire episode was initially planned for the series but wasn’t aired separately. Instead, its content was incorporated into other episodes. In a recent interview with Backstory Magazine, Schaeffer clarified that the rumor about WandaVision having ten episodes in total was true. She explained that two of these episodes were merged together, thus ending any speculation about additional storylines.

Initially, “WandaVision” was planned for ten episodes. However, due to practical, financial, and creative considerations, two of these episodes were merged together. As for “Agatha All Along,” I aimed to maintain the same scope and space as “WandaVision,” which is why it ultimately consists of nine episodes instead of ten.

Based on what Matt Shakman, the episode director, shared in an interview on Kevin Smith’s podcast ‘Fatman Beyond’ back in 2021, it appears that the structure and number of episodes for ‘WandaVision’ were subject to frequent adjustments. He mentioned that “things were constantly changing and getting reworked,” especially in terms of the real-world elements and the finale. It seems there was a lot of trial and error involved as they tried out various approaches. At one point, it appears they had planned for 10 episodes but later decided to combine a few to improve the overall flow.

Was Anything Cut?

Both quotes make it sound like the full story was ultimately told, even if the episode count was changed. However, we do know a bit about what was cut and altered. For one thing, Schaeffer told Variety earlier this month that Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) was originally meant to appear in a post-credit scene, but the idea was dropped due to pandemic restrictions during filming. She said: “It’s Wanda sitting on the porch of that cabin, and she’s rocking peacefully. And you know how Strange can do those circles around someone, and make them go somewhere? The circle starts around her, like she’s going to be teleported somewhere, and she stops it, so Strange has to show up in person. I just loved that so much, that Wanda would be like, ‘No, I’m not going to go where you want to teleport me. You’re going to have to come to my door.’ It was a good one, but another tag took its place.”

Moreover, the series “WandaVision” became available on home video with additional content such as deleted scenes. One of these extra scenes portrays Ralph Boehner (Evan Peters) disabling his ankle monitor and escaping from the authorities, which sheds light on his delayed appearance in “Agatha All Along”.

Currently streaming on Disney+, you can find “WandaVision: Agatha’s True Story,” “Agatha All Along,” and “Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Chaos.” Characters from these stories may reappear anywhere within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but fans eagerly anticipate further developments for them in the upcoming solo Vision series, set to premiere in 2026.
