During the next significant upgrade of Leviathans, War Thunder will debut a fresh, innovative feature specifically designed for contemporary Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft systems. Dubbed the Radar Control Screen, this tool aims to enhance the efficiency of anti-air combat. Here’s a closer look at it.
What is the Radar Control Screen?
You can open it either by pressing a designated shortcut key or clicking on the radar symbol while operating an SPAA equipped with radar. Upon opening, the screen displays four main areas.
[OR]
To use the radar feature of your SPAA, you can press a hotkey or click the radar icon. When it’s open, there are four primary sections visible on the screen.
1. Plan Position Indicator (PPI)
The main screen in question is where you find the PPI radar display. This area shows objects based on their range and direction. Each object is assigned an identification number. If an object temporarily vanishes and reappears, it receives a new number. Radars with Track While Scan (TWS) mode and Non-Cooperative Target Recognition (NCTR) provide additional details such as the speed vector and type of object (aircraft or missile). By clicking on an object here, your focus will be directed towards it, and you can even launch from this view.
2. Sight View
In the upper-left corner, a compact display pops up. This screen offers a real-time view similar to what you’d normally see. You have the ability to adjust the magnification level as needed. If your vehicle is equipped with night vision or thermal imaging capabilities, you can switch between these modes right here.
3. Elevation-Azimuth Indicator
On the left, you’ll find a vertical column displaying information. This column indicates the azimuth and elevation of all detected targets. If your radar is equipped with NCTR, it will additionally display the target type in this column.
4. Target List
In the upper right corner, you’ll find a table displaying detected contacts. You have the flexibility to sort this table by angle (azimuth), altitude, speed, or threat level. To focus on a specific target, simply double-click it. This tool is particularly useful when operating with a controller or playing on a console.
Control Panels
Below the PPI, two rows of controls appear:
- Radar controls let you toggle radar on or off, switch between radar and IRST, change search modes, and adjust scope scale. You can also select and acquire targets.
- Fire controls handle missiles and guns. You can turn the seeker on/off, launch missiles, or lock guns and fire automatically. The system calculates the lead point for you.
Mouse and Key Controls
When you switch to radar mode, some controls adjust subtly. To launch missiles, simply right-click. For selecting and interacting with radar components, use the left-click. Don’t worry, your keyboard shortcuts will still function as well. The mouse controls are automatically configured for this particular screen.
Why This Matters
With this radar system, you gain a comprehensive understanding of the situation. You’re able to identify objectives, prioritize them promptly, and take swift action. Plus, you remain updated on your team’s progress as they engage in combat. It’s not about shooting aimlessly; rather, it provides an entire sky view known as PPI (Plan Position Indicator) view.
Tactical Tips
- Watch your position. Use the radar, but stay mobile.
- Blend sensors. Combine radar scans with visual checks.
- Move wisely. After spotting enemies, reposition to safer ground.
- Stay alert. Don’t ignore threats from behind or the sides.
