Warner Bros. Games Closes Multiple Studios, Wonder Woman Cancelled

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but feel the weight of the gaming world shifting under my feet as I hear news about Warner Bros. Games closing several studios. It’s like a punch to the gut when I learn that Monolith Productions, known for Middle-earth: Shadow of War, Player First Games behind MultiVersus, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego, focusing on free-to-play mobile games, have all shut down. To add salt to the wound, they’ve also cancelled the in-development Wonder Woman game that Monolith Productions was working on. It’s a tough time for gamers everywhere as we watch our favorite studios and projects fade away.

According to Jason Schreier from Bloomberg, and confirmed by WB to Kotaku in a statement (thanks, IGN), we’ve been receiving rumors about potential issues with Wonder Woman for quite some time. However, the official announcement seems surprising given the context; WB’s statement reads:

In order to produce top-tier games based on our popular franchises such as Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones, we’ve had to make tough choices regarding our studio structure and investments. As a result, after thorough evaluation, we are shutting down three of our studios – Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. This shift is a strategic move aimed at focusing our direction, not a reflection of the skill or dedication within these teams.

Regarding the development of Monolith’s Wonder Woman game, we regret to inform you that it won’t proceed any further. Unfortunately, this decision doesn’t align with our current strategic plans. Despite this setback, our team is determined and eager to continue creating exceptional games for our dedicated fanbase, utilizing our top-notch studios. We are committed to restoring profitability and growth to our Games division by 2025 and beyond.
