Warner Bros. is Looking to License Out its IP to Other Developers

As a long-time fan who has grown up with Warner Bros.’ incredible array of characters gracing my screen, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions hearing about their shift in gaming strategy. On one hand, it’s exciting to imagine the potential of seeing new interpretations of these beloved IPs from various external studios – much like how Marvel Studios has breathed fresh life into its universe.

The collection of intellectual properties managed by Warner Bros. is one of their most valuable resources, yet their gaming division, similar to the broader company, has been facing challenges. In fact, revenue for WB Games dropped by 41% in the last quarter as a result of the underperformance of “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.”

During a recent earnings call, David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, hinted at changes in their gaming business strategy. He suggested that instead of solely relying on internal development studios, they plan to grant licenses for some of their intellectual properties (IP) to external development companies. This could potentially mean that games based on WB IP might be developed by studios other than Warner Bros. going forward.

As a passionate fan, I’m excited to share that our media company boasts an impressive collection of 11 studios under our roof. We’re rich not just in resources, but also in Intellectual Property (IP). This valuable asset has sparked significant interest from other parties who are eager to collaborate and capitalize on some of this IP for gaming purposes.

As a long-time fan of these iconic franchises, the idea of Warner Bros. (WB) licensing out their extensive collection of IP, such as Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Batman, and Superman, to developers across the industry is nothing short of exhilarating! Growing up with these characters has been a significant part of my life, shaping my imagination and fueling my passion for storytelling.
