As a hardcore DC fan and gamer myself, let me tell you that the universe is brimming with fantastic characters – from the iconic trio of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, to lesser-known gems like Aztek and Wildfire. However, it seems Warner Bros. often prioritizes its “Trinity,” especially when it comes to video games. Recently, a game starring John Constantine was proposed at WB Games, but unfortunately, the concept didn’t fly. At this point, specifics are scant, but for those of us eagerly waiting for another Constantine game, it seems our hopes might have been snuffed out once more.
In an unexpected twist, a video game focusing on the character John Constantine would have offered Warner Bros. a unique opportunity to explore a fresh perspective with one of their DC characters. Unlike the comics featuring DC’s Trinity or traditional Justice League members, the tone of the “Hellblazer” series is distinctly different for Constantine. A solo game where Constantine battles demons could have been thrilling and unique, appealing to both comic book novices and viewers who recognize him from shows like “Legends of Tomorrow.
Although Warner Bros. declined the proposal for a Constantine series, the character gained significant momentum in 2005. After the movie’s release, starring Keanu Reeves, a Constantine video game was launched on Xbox, PlayStation 2, and PC. This marked the last time John Constantine appeared as the primary character in a video game, although he has made occasional appearances in other games since then.
Bloomberg’s article about Constantine was part of a broader narrative focusing on issues within Warner Bros.’ video game sector. The recent disappointments with games like “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” and “MultiVersus” have cast doubt over the division’s future, as there aren’t many major titles in the near future. Those currently in development appear to be further off, such as the “Wonder Woman” game from Monolith, which was announced in 2021 but seems to have vanished since then. Rocksteady Studios, known for its work on the Arkham franchise, appears to have returned to Batman-themed projects, much to the delight of fans. However, it looks like we won’t be able to play this new game for several years.
It’s unfortunate that WB Games isn’t currently delivering top-notch gaming experiences for DC fans, given the wealth of characters they possess. However, there’s always hope that things will improve in the future. The cancellation of projects and unfulfilled ideas is disappointing, but perhaps we might witness more collaborations between DC and popular games like Fortnite, as rumors about MultiVersus suggest. So, let’s keep our fingers crossed for a brighter future!
