Warners Rejected David Fincher’s Pitch For ‘Creepy’ Harry Potter

David Fincher had his idea for the Harry Potter film series rejected because it was too “creepy.”

In a meeting, a 62-year-old movie director discussed with Warner Bros. leaders about potentially leading the enchanting wizard series, but in the end, his idea was considered too gloomy.

He told Variety: “I was asked to come in and talk to them about how I would do Harry Potter.

I recall expressing my preference for not creating a polished, typical Hollywood version. Instead, I wanted to produce something reminiscent of ‘Withnail and I’, and I aimed for an unsettling, eerie feel.

The director of “Fight Club” shared that the producers didn’t favor his vision for the series, as they were aiming for a more lighthearted approach when adapting the J.K. Rowling novels into productions instead.

He added: “They were like, ‘We want Thom Browne schooldays by way of Oliver.’”

Previously, Fincher has tackled film adaptations such as “Gone Girl” and “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, yet the success of these books didn’t faze him when he accepted those projects.

He mentioned: “Does the work already have an established fanbase? That’s someone else’s responsibility. The books are often bought by movie studios when they see there’s a built-in audience, so I typically join the picture once it’s been determined that this is a appealing project. I was drawn to Gone Girl, even though it was already a bestseller … I appreciated the concept of retribution for our self-centered tendencies in choosing a partner.

In “Dragon Tattoo,” I find myself drawn more to the setting of “Chinatown” and its gritty atmosphere than any hacker elements. However, what captivated me was the character of the broken girl who gets an opportunity to conduct research with a man she’s unsure of. As for their relationship, I’m not convinced he’s kind, but I believe he treats her as one should be treated. This treatment, for her, is a profound revelation.

If you’ve visited Sweden before, it’s comparable to the state of California in size but has a population similar to Los Angeles County. This vast landscape provides ample space for mysterious activities, such as serial killings and body disposals. The allure of accurately portraying the harshness and beauty of a winter investigation was intriguing to me.

In relation to the production of the 2007 thriller movie Zodiac, which chronicled a 35-year investigation into the Zodiac killings, the director openly acknowledged that he had harbored a lasting fascination with this real-life crime story.

He mentioned that “the Zodiac Killer” was a bogeyman for him when he was just seven years old. As he went through a similar journey as the main character, he found himself feeling a connection or understanding with that experience.
