Watch Dogs Movie Wraps Filming

Watch Dogs Movie Wraps Filming

As a long-time fan of the Watch Dogs franchise, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia as the film adaptation finally wraps production! After following its development since 2015, it’s been quite the rollercoaster ride – much like hacking through the digital streets of Chicago in the game itself.

The highly anticipated movie adaptation of the popular Ubisoft game “Watch Dogs” has finally completed filming. The main cast includes Tom Blyth (from “Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes”), Markella Kavenagh (“Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”), and Sophie Wilde (“Everything Now”). Development for this project began back in 2015, but it wasn’t until earlier this summer that active production got underway, with Mathieu Turi (“The Deep Dark”) as director. The screenplay is written by Christie LeBlanc (“Oxygen”) and Victoria Bata (“Lessons in Chemistry”). This movie has had a long journey through development hell, but it’s now being produced by New Regency, with distribution expected to be handled by Disney following their merger with 20th Century Fox.

Ubisoft playfully announced on social media, “Run the movie file (#watchdogsmovie.mp4)… Filming wrapped!”, implying that filming for the Watch Dogs movie is now finished. Here’s the post:

The “Watch Dogs” game series offers a diverse array of gameplay experiences, from action-packed gunfights to brain-teasing puzzles. This blend creates a captivating environment where the overall atmosphere outshines individual narratives. As of now, there are three games in the series, which were launched between 2014 and 2020. Additionally, you’ll find related novels, comics, and once upon a time, an animated series was being developed, though it didn’t come to fruition.

In a fictionalized Chicago, the main character is Aiden Pearce, a skilled hacker, who embarks on a relentless quest for vengeance following the tragic demise of his niece. This compelling setup offers a solid foundation in a universe reminiscent of the one portrayed in ‘John Wick’. However, it’s worth mentioning that there are numerous aspects unique to the world of ‘Watch Dogs’ they can draw upon.

The game was initially created as an installment for the “Driver” series, but it shifted its direction following the financial failure of “Driver: San Francisco” in 2011. Almost immediately, whispers about a cinematic adaptation began circulating, and there were even early rumors suggesting that Ubisoft was considering making a movie, even before the launch of the first “Watch Dogs.

Since 2014, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese have been tasked with writing a film, but that project didn’t come together, which might have been beneficial as it provided them the opportunity to focus on a project known as Deadpool instead. The movie adaptation of Watch Dogs has been in various stages of development since then, passing through numerous writers and directors before they found a script that New Regency was prepared to invest in.

There’s no release window for Watch Dogs yet.
