After being startled, Gayle takes a step back in amazement, flings her handbag onto a close-by piece of furniture, and places both hands over her heart.

50-year long friend, Oprah’s post says, “We’ve been celebrating your 70th birthday because everyone who adores you is gathered!” The surprise was challenging to pull off, but we came up with tales and falsehoods to maintain the secret. Happy birthday, @gayleking! We almost gave you a scare.

Later on, Gayle described the events that led to the stunt. On her Instagram post, she exclaimed, “What a shock!!!” She had assumed she was attending Oprah’s holiday dinner for the Oprah Daily team at their favorite restaurant, Cipriani Downtown New York, and then something entirely different transpired…
