Watch: Harrison Ford Honored With Disney Legend Award

As a long-time movie enthusiast with a soft spot for iconic characters and timeless stories, I must say that watching Anthony Mackie’s heartfelt tribute to Harrison Ford during the Disney Legends Awards ceremony was an emotional rollercoaster. The bond between these two talented actors is palpable, and it’s clear that Ford has been a guiding light for Mackie throughout his career.

At the D23 fan event last weekend, Anthony Mackie paid tribute to his “Captain America: Brave New World” co-star, Harrison Ford, who was inducted into the 2024 class of Disney Legends. Known for his roles in “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones,” Ford is set to make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, also known as Red Hulk, in an upcoming Marvel Studios movie. The 82-year-old actor was one of 14 artists and visionaries honored during the ceremony, which celebrates individuals who have greatly impacted Disney’s 101-year history.

“Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, explained that the Disney Legends Award is the highest distinction we bestow. It’s given as a tribute to talent, an acknowledgement of achievement, but most importantly, it’s a heartfelt expression of our immense gratitude. The recipients of this award are a cherished part of our history due to their remarkable contributions that have consistently entertained and brought joy to fans worldwide.”

Introducing a stellar tribute video for Harrison Ford, whom Iger referred to as the epitome of a leading man, standing unparalleled in his unique category, several notable figures made an appearance. These included actor Kelvin Mackie, Kathleen Kennedy (president of Lucasfilm), Steven Spielberg (director of the Indiana Jones series), producer Frank Marshall, Karen Allen (star of Raiders of the Lost Ark), Ke Huy Quan (from Temple of Doom), Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Dial of Destiny), Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley (co-stars from The Force Awakens), and George Lucas, another Disney Legend.

As a grateful gamer in this cinematic journey, I first crossed paths with you back in 2003, in a minor role in a blockbuster film, Hollywood Homicide. Now, I’m honored to work alongside you daily – not just as my mentor, but also as my fellow actor. The lessons you imparted on set every day, showing me the essence of being a leading man, have truly left an indelible mark on me. Even though it was my movie, I can’t help but acknowledge the profound impact your guidance has had on my career. You showed me what it takes to lead a crew, to lead a cast, and to be the main star. For that, I am eternally grateful.

Upon receiving the award, an emotional Ford expressed his deep gratitude for being acknowledged as a Disney Legend, a 37-year-old tradition he feels honored to be a part of.

As a seasoned professional with years of experience in the entertainment industry, I can wholeheartedly agree with Harrison Ford’s sentiments about collaboration and camaraderie. Throughout my career, I too have found that no one works alone in this business; instead, we work together, sharing ideas, skills, and passion to create something greater than ourselves. The stories we tell are not just for the audience but also about us, reflecting our common humanity.

As a lifelong fan of film and television, I am thrilled to see such a diverse group of talented individuals being honored this year. Having grown up watching “The Simpsons” and marveling at the incredible world-building of “Avatar,” it’s truly humbling to know that the creators behind these iconic works are being recognized for their contributions to the industry.

As a lifelong Disney fanatic who has grown up with their stories and characters shaping my childhood, I’m beyond excited to share that the 2024 Disney Legends Awards Ceremony is now streaming on Disney+! The anticipation builds as I eagerly await Marvel Studios’ upcoming release, “Captain America: Brave New World,” which opens in theaters on February 14th, 2025. With a cast that includes Anthony Mackie and Chris Evans reprising their roles as Captain America alongside Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Xosha Roquemore, Carl Lumbly, Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, and Tim Blake Nelson, I have no doubt it will be an action-packed and emotional journey. Growing up watching Marvel movies has always been a special part of my life, and the thought of seeing these characters on the big screen again fills me with nostalgia and excitement for what’s to come. This is truly a dream come true for any Marvel fan!
